1989 90hp.... motor is running good at WOT 5500 plus rpm, but at idle it smokes like crazy an very hard to put in gear to take off.as soon as the motor is good an warm it will idle while in gear, but if you shut it off an wait 10 min.s you have to go thru the whole routine trying to get it in gear without stalling. this last trip I used a wooded stick to measure my oil in the tank, ran about a gal of gas thru the motor at the lake and the oil tank was down over 2",THATS a lot oil..So I disconnected the VRO an unplug all the wiring, going to try an go on a test run and see if the idle problem is now gone..yes the gas is now mixed at 50-1...... this motor has new power pack, 4 new coils ( 260 volts), carb. rebuilt, every gas is new, new fuel filters..

Re: VRO is now gone

well took it for a test run an everything seem fine. never did stall even after sitting for a few min.s, then restart an put in gear no problems. After 3rd run putting back at idle the motor stalled an was very hard to restart( it was flooded. It would not restart untill I tilted the motor way up, but as soon as you tilt it down it will stall out. Before I unhooked the VRO the engine would idle fine while tilted all the way down.Even with it tilted up if you touch the choke 1 time it will die , before the motor would rev. up some everything you touch the choke. Acts like it getting way to much gas now.The red choke lever is in the right position.I only ran it about 3 miles tops an the gas gauge shows almost 2-3 gals. gone... none of the gas lines are leaking.........

Everytime you hit the choke it would rev up????

that means you are running lean.
first thing i would do is to check the compression en the cylinders.

than if thats all good, i would rebuild the carbs, do a link and sinc, new plugs and thermostats.

if there is still an isseu than check if the idle timing/ pickup timing is correct.

good luck.

I rechecked the comp. 116,116,115,116, I rechecked the timing using the setup in the top secret files, it is good, the plugs have only a fews hours on them.... going to have to wait till next sat. too do any more work, have to work 12 hour shifts rest of the week.......thanks for any help

The plugs have only a few hours on them, but how do they look? New plugs can foul quickly, of course, when things aren't running right.

The fact that 2" of oil was used when only a gallon of gas was used, indicates that there is a restriction in the fuel supply. A clogged or restricted fuel line will cause more oil to be pulled by the VRO. So check the fuel supply path from the tank, to the gas filter (install a fresh one), to the primer bulb (could have broken check valve springs) and be sure the fuel line is not pinched anywhere along its entire length.

Also supporting evidence of fuel restriction is that the motor seems to be running lean from your description.

An easy test is to connect a portable tank that you know is in good working condition and see how the boat runs. Do the test with and without the VRO connected.

hey Mark42 do you think a fuel restriction would still let the motor get up to 5500 rpm, the motor runs fine at speed... the boat has 2 fuel filters 1 at the gas tank and 1 just before the carb.s, they are both new with only a few hours on them, but they could be dirty at least the one near the tank.I pulled the plugs an they look ok, they are the ql82c so they kept the oil burned off pretty good...maybe at the low RPM not enough power from fuel pump if the filters are dirty ? I will get a gal. of gas and bypass that 1st filter an see if it runs better, maybe I will get lucky.............

Oh, gee, I don't know. Could, as the motor runs off the fuel in the bowl, then because gas is not getting replaced as fast as its being used, it runs lean.

I'm not 100% sure that is your problem, but the symptoms are associated with fuel restriction.

Actually, an air leak into the gasoline line will cause the motor to over oil. High speed performance may not be affected, depending on the size of the air leak.

A gasoline restriction would keep the motor from revving up to max RPM.
