Update: Forget the Rich (etc), TAX THE FRENCH!!! They like that stuff. Also tax anyone that speaks French, has a French name, looks French, or has ever drank/drunk a bottle of French wine. Double tax the Que-beck people (Canadians posing as French) because they have a sever identity crises that kind feels like it might want to be French. And tax frogs because they might be French, too, or maybe they know a French frog.

As I recall some of my right wing buddies once said the president has no say so about oil prices and there was nothing he could do to help. I personally think he can do a lot more than this.

"Bush said the Federal Trade Commission, the Justice Department and the Energy Department were investigating whether the price of gasoline has been unfairly manipulated."

Yawn!!!! Didn't we go through this last year when the oil company big wigs were called in and asked to testify NOT under oath about if they were manipulating the market, prices and such? I agree tx, I heard the same thing, and from many, many iboaters too.

So either baby bush and his backers were lying before, or he's wasting our time and paying lip-service only to the issue.

My biggest issue is the record high prices, and the record high profits of the oil companies. I am not the sharpest crayon in the box, but I am smart enough to see a correlation. Big oil certainly has some influence and effect on the commodities markets.

I have said it for a long time and will reiterate it again, we will continue to be raped by the energy industry as long as we have this administration. I don't think it will matter a great deal what party is in power next presidency. But IMHO this administration has no concern for the average American citizen. It's corporate welfare programs and it's political party's favors-for-sale history doesn't lend w any credibility in dealing with the powerful oil industry in any meaningful (to the people) fashion.

So please wake me when something REAL happens.

Nothing he or congress can do but frack it up even more. Any positive action they could have done...i.e. Anwar (sp)is days late and $$ short. Thank your Greenie friends every time you cash out at the pump.

Re: "W" Saves The Day!

How about reinstating/expanding/increasing the gas-guzzler tax? Make those enormous senseless behemoths less appealing. Force the carmakers to increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicle by market demands, not by the ridiculous CAFE standards.

For those of you "Right-wingers" this would accomplish two things, reduce the demand/affordability of the grotesquely fuel thirsty no-reason-to-exist hulks, and therefore reduce demand for gasoline. Also it could raise dollars to be used for (a)reduction of the current gasoline tax or (b) raise money for much needed highway repairs.

But that is too liberal an idea, so it could never fly except in a socialist society. ;)

Re: "W" Saves The Day!

David that wouldnt have hardly any effect. Rich people can afford these gas guzzlers, so a little bit higher tax wont slow them down.

CAFE is a joke cause it doenst take into account the amount of miles actually driven by the cares, just an average of the amount sold. The big corps dump small cars at low prices to make up for thier guzzlers. No one ever checks how many miles each car is actually driven.

Demand isnt something that is easily controlled. It takes years for more fuel effcient vehicles to get into use.

The best way is to increase supply. Open up some oil fields that are closed. Use biodiesel for fleet vehicles. Use ethanol that is made only using non-fossil fuels.

Only this will help in the long run.

It is simply a matter of population outgrowing the pace of fuel efficent cars.

Ken

HAHAHAHAHAHHA

That is the funniest thing I have ever heard in my life. Population hasn't outgrown shyte. Population is buying inefficient huge vehicles because the automotive developers have had a genious marketing strategy that has duped us into believing we need a Cheverolet Suburban to take two kids to school.

Population has grown so used to these big arse couches on wheels that the thought of (God Forbid) driving in a car is unforgiveable. There are plenty of good quality efficient cars on the road, but you think we are going to get anyone in them without forcing them? The new Honda Civic gets 40mpg, and costs $14,000. It is roomy, vastly more reliable than any monster GM is producing, but you don't have all that cargo space a Yukon has (that no one uses) or that third row bench (that no one uses).

The Prez can't force Big Oil to do anything, because it isn't Big Oil that is the problem. It is us. Tax breaks, refining this, ANWR that, none of it matters. It is you people who keep going to the dealership and buying the new 16mpg beast because you "need" it when deep down you refuse to admit that you just want to be like the other guys at work. We only have ourselves to blame...

Even if it is lower today accounting for inflation, I don't want to play a guessing game every day I need fuel. If the price would stay steady for at LEAST a month, people wouldn't be so upset I believe.

Jason wrote,

"Population is buying inefficient huge vehicles because the automotive developers have had a genious marketing strategy that has duped us into believing we need a Cheverolet Suburban to take two kids to school."

Exactly Jason, Its all marketing. The automobile industry has the American male thinking that if the don't drive the right kind of pickup truck, than they're not a "real man". Or if you drive this pickup or that pickup then that makes tougher or more manly then your neighbors. If you drive a certain vehicle you will have more friends. If you drive a certain vehicle you'll look more attractive to the opposite sex. If you drive a certain vehicle you'll be more successful. And on and on.

The other day my kids missed the school bus and I drove them to school. I couldn't believe all the SUVs with big hitches on the back and not a spec of paint off of the inside of the receiver. People are buying the vehicles with no use for them. They just like the idea of sitting up higher than everyone else. Its kind of a security thing.
