W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

I have been running Windows 98 for several years. Also have Norton AV 2005 and AOL 6.0.

My printer croaked and I got a new Digicam for Fathers' Day.

Bought a HP 3930 printer and have drivers for the new Camera. Neither will run under W98.

Soooooo, I got Windows XP. Did an install with it. Now Norton won't run at all and the AOL dropped the Buddy list and won't go to any web page.

Tried to uninstall Norton. Error. Says it can't find the install file. Abort.:%

Tried to install the printer. Error. Says it is not there.:'(

Uninstalled the XP. Back in W98. Now Norton works and AOL works. Tried again to uninstall Norton. Same error message. I still don't have a printer or the new camera. :(

Before I take this RATZAKRATZA FORGALUMIC PEKALUMER 'puter to a conehead to be made to work correctly does anyone have any suggestions?:'(

JB,

When you are installing the applications, are you installing the versions for XP?

Re: W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

I just had W98 crash on my old computer and my daughter bought me a copy of XP.

Tried to install. Couldn't get it to work right.

Took it to a pro, who charged me $75 to tell me "Too bad,so sad, How old is that computer, anyway?" (I have no idea)
Now using my HP laptop running XP. Ordered a new USB keyboard, and hopefully just use this full time.

You can download from the HP site the necessary printer drivers for XP---just plug it in and the site will find it. Same with any HP product

My penance is to say "I love computers;isn't it grand how easy life is now" 50 times

Good Luck!

JB, another question or two...

Was XP an upgrade install, or a format/install.

Since it's a new printer, I'm gussing it hooks uo via a USB plug. Any idea if the USB ports detected and installed correctly in the device manager?

In my experience you need to make a NEW install and not have it install over the old Win98

It tends to muck things up when you don’t start fresh

This would require you to have all your data backed up and disks for all the programs that you need to install again afterwards

Xp has most device drivers on the disk BUT sometimes you need to download then ahead of time to complete the install

This is what I was thinking too.

So, JB...was it an upgrade or a full format/install? Inquirying minds want to know. :)

Re: W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

It was an upgrade with dynamic update.

How/where do I save about 50mb of personal files, pix, etc?

The last time I upgraded (from W95 to W98 ) I simply added another hard drive but now I already have 2 for about 7GB.

Gonna spend the bux to get a conehead to do it. Maybe he can concentrate my personal stuff on one HD, format the other and do a fresh install on the formatted one.

Orrrrr. What if i get a R/W CD drive and save all my personal stuff to a CD. Then format and do a new install?

That's a drop in the ocean these days. Many ways to save 50mb.

USB stick is popular or burn it to CD, you can also send it to your set top box Even an ipod can be used for file storage.

I recently upgraded from 98 to XPPro, did an 'upgrade' install without incident. Don't know if the 'Pro' made any difference.

JB, if you don't have a way to save your stuff, you can try one of those on-line storage outfits.

I'm not a puter geek but have btdt where you are going from 98se to XP

Easy way is to buy a thumb drive. 49.00 for a 2 gig flash drive.
Dump everything on it.

Follow the advice given for installing XP and then just drag and drop what you want from the thumb drive after it's done.

That worked for us.
Guys if this isn't good advice please feel free to correct.

I did not suggest a 512 meg thumb drive for 15 dollars because my wife has one data file at 18 Gigs.

Re: W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

JB, Norton will not work with an upgrade of the operating system. It will have to be reinstalled. AOL 6.0 may not either. You know the newer version (9.0) has AV and anti-spyware built in? I would buy the cd burner, If you have two hard drives and they only equal 7 gigs of storage, then they are fairly old. I would copy all your pics and files onto the cd's, so that when those old drives die, you still have your personal data. Win98 does not work with USB devices very well, unless that portable drive, the other guys suggested, has a driver disk, it probably won't work in win98.

It might be about time to just invest in a new computer! :'(

edit: Depending what version of 98 you have, there may not be any support for USB devices. 98se had support, 98A did not. That maybe why you can't install the printer or camera.

Re: W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

First off, how old is your computer?
Most older pre-XP computers are not able to run XP.
And yours sounds old if it was originally a win95 model.

Does your computer have USB 1.0 or the newer USB 2 ?

By the time you spend the $ to get a conehead to fix it, IF they can,
you could buy a new $400 computer.

Hook them together and transfer your files.

You really should have all those memories backed up already.

I think its time to call (insert computer vendor or your choice).

Re: W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

Just talked to Dave (Borealis Computers), who built this thing to my order in 2004. Don't need a new 'puter. I have 20GB of hard drive, 256m of RAM and a really fast Intel processor.

He is gonna save all my personal stuff, format the hard drive and load XP, then put all my personal stuff back.

Trash Norton and replace it with one he likes better, trash Spybot and use the Microsoft spycatcher.

$125.

Lose my 'puter for a couple days, get it back running right. Priceless.

You definately have plenty of computer to run XP. I would still suggest using a cd or dvd burner for the pictures, if the hard drive dies, sometimes there is no getting them back!!! You might ask him about upgrading your RAM to 512mb.

Yeah, 256 MB is the bare minimum. You will be much happier with a RAM upgrade.

I like that guy, Norton is a hog, it sucks up resources with the best of them. Hopefully he'll get you into AVG. I've been using the free version for 4 years and it works great.

Okay. Gonna go to AOL 9.0 before I take it in to Dave, the conehead.

Asked him about going to 512Mb of Ram. He said I don't need it for what I do.

I was wrong when I said 7GB of HD. I have 20GB on one HD, 1.2GB on the other.

Thank goodness you and your computer will like AVG Anti virus much better....now make sure you tell him you have AOL hopefully he can talk you into getting rid of the second worst program on your PC, no reason to have it better options for less money......

Re: W98 to WXP? In trouble here.

Sorry I can't offer much advice on the upgrade to XP (I'm a 98 fan) but I agree whole heartedly to get rid of anything Norton related. Takes total control and causes nothing but headaches. Tried it 15 years ago and dumped it then. Tried again last year with a 'free' copy and had the same results. Norton will never be installed on a PC of mine. AVG all the way. Used it for 5 or 6 years now with no complaints or problems.
