Very common for the rear controls to get wet and stop working.

More than one of the "options" you listed are standard on Chaparrals. (Bimini top and stereo are just the ones I am certain of. But the covers and the docking lights probably are too) And thus one of the many shortcomings of NADA.

Actually with Nada you start with the base and add for all option's....NADA yes NADA great firewood starting material.

If you do that on a Chaparral, you get an inflated number. For example, in 2001 I could get my 1997 Chaparral 2135 to an NADA retail price that was just $1500 less than what my dad paid for the boat brand new in 1997. Firewood indeed. (but the bank liked it!)

those numbers, WITH OPTIONS ADDED- $37k to $42k-- for that boat are about right. Proof of that is on BoatTrader, where the ten 2006 Chap 256ssi's for sale range from a low of $38k to a high of $47k... yes, you do have to add in the options...

As for the problems-- zipper can be fixed by a local shop for like $30 to $50, and the controls for the stereo you can find online for around $30 (Just bought one myself last year, turns out I didn't need it)...

Minor issues, but feel free to make them out to be huge problems if it'll get the price down bit! :)

Re: Want to buy a Chaparrel 2006 256 SSI and need advise

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I actually found a 2008 256 ssi in OC, Maryland that I have a surveyor looking at this afternoon. He is doing an initial look see. The price is up a bit, but it has only 50 hours, has been on a lift, no bottom paint, and a trailer. I received paperwork showing a shop did the winterization and I am hoping we can negotiate to around 50k.

But since it's has "only" 50 hours (in 5 years?!) it must be worth more than that, right? ;)

Maybe or maybe not . . . who's to say what the distribution of hours is accross those 5 years.

For example, if the hours were something like:

40-10-0-0-0 over the past 5 years . . . would that be worth more to you? or less? :noidea:

Ted, I think you're missing my sarcastic point?
That low of hours is always a "red-flag" for me. Regardless of the distribution of the hours, I am always concerned when a boat gets used that little. I get concerned because of things I read on here and see in real life. Things like "well it took me 2 years, but I finally got to my 20 hour service!", or "since I only put 10 hours on it this year, I don't need to pull or service the drive this winter because the manual says every 50 (or whatever) hours...".

Yup, wasn't really sure, but looks like we are saying the same thing . . .

. . . waiting for the OP to come back and validate if that is the boat that I posted the CL add for . . .

I'm not a betting man but I will bet that the CL add is the same boat. Not like there are 30 different 2008 Chap 256's for sale in Maryland....

Price is high, regardless of hours and if it's in "like new" condition.

Hours are regional that's for sure. 10 hours of engine time during our 3 month season is common since you float 90% of the time with the engine off. The higher the cost to operate the more the bigger boats seem to sit in the slip. I'm running about 12 or so hours a year on my Chap of engine time but we certainly use it 20 times more than that just floating. Larger lakes bump up the hours. Can't imagine ocean and bays only averaging 10 hours a year.

You know, it must be tough for folks posting about prospective boats and getting all sorts of negativity and caution flags . . .

That's a good one! :)

But Ted you know sometimes (a lot of the time) people need to hear the hard truth. I am not saying this boat he wants is a turd, but I would be just as cautious about it as I would be if it had 800 hours on it. Especially at upwards of $50,000!

The worst thing you can do to a boat is put it in the water. The second worse thing is to not use it. Third is to not maintain it. That's all I'm saying.

Oh, definitely some folks need a little water thrown on them to curb the enthusiasm and get them to think about the potential pitfalls . . . but in a way I feel bad for some folks who get bombarded with cautionary advice and doom & gloom . . . it probably helps more than it hurts though :noidea:

Re: Want to buy a Chaparrel 2006 256 SSI and need advise

Just to follow up, we did a survey, mechanic evaluation, and sea test this past weekend. I saw all of the annual maintenance records which showed it was serviced regularly. The boat is clean and in nice interior condition inside and out. The motor shows no signs of rust, though there is some mold on the hull around the sides of the motor.

A compression test showed the motor is running perfectly. The mechanic extracted some oil, and is sending out for analysis. She started right up, and ran smooth. She was able to hit 61 on the speedo with 5 adults and 3/4 tank of gas. The ride was smooth and cut through the wakes like butter.
There are a few items I am waiting to hear back from the owner to resolve.. The main issues are Vacuflush didnt flush, and the trim indicator didnt work. Assuming we can resolve these issues, we will be in the Chaparral Family.
