want to run my engine out of the boat.

back story on the engine it started knocking last year. so we pulled it. Piston 3 was broke. we sent the block and the head out to a machine shop and they did their thing.
Me and son just finished up rebuilding the engine and we want to start it and run it before we put it back in the boat to make sure it runs good and doesn't leak.
how would we go about wiring it up to run it.
I bought a starter trigger to do this.

Connect a battery to the heavy red and to ground.
On the 10 pin plug that the instrument harness plugs into...


Should have a red/purple (red on pre-BIA colour wiring) on pin #6. That's power.
A purple (white on pre-BIA) on #5 is your 'Ign ON'.. Jump 5 to 6 with a short length of wire.
Crank using your remote starter switch. (Make sure you have water going into the hose that goes into the thermostat housing, that would be connected to the transom water inlet).
To stop the engine, pull the 5 to 6 wire.

Thats the thing i dont have a plug like that, all i have is a wire harness that ties into a wire block on a plate that is still in the boat.
so i dont have a wire harness on the engine.
the picture show how its connected to the battery power when its in the boat. left side of picture.

I dont have the cylinder style. i have the square one that looks like a box where do i connect it too.

If your wiring looks like that, who knows what you have in there. But at one point in your boat's life there was a purple wire going to your coil positive. That's where you need to power the ignition.

It looks like someone replaced your cannon plug with a simple terminal strip. So find the wires the color on the engine side of the terminal strip. If the entire harness is homemade you will have to trace them out.

I dont have the cylinder style. i have the square one that looks like a box where do i connect it too.

Negative Cable to the block and Positive cable to starter post.

Take small gauge jumper and go from Positive post + side on the coil. This wire is hot wiring the ignition

Now jump starter solenoid to crank the motor over

Yes it would have had a cannon plug from new. Dont think your engine is a 1977, it would have been labeled a 140 unless they swapped the '85 valve cover ... so who knows what is there.

You can rewire the boat but I would do some diagnostics first, trace out what is wrong. Seems like cannon plug was corroded and someone bought a $3 terminal strip at home depot... in the end if the terminal strip works no need to rewire, but again trace out the harness by wire color if it works you can always replace later.

thats pretty much what it is.

if i do decide to go with the cannon style plug how many pin plug will i need.
all thats on the motor is starter, alternator, electric choke, temp sensor, oil pressure sending unit, and the shift kill switch.
Plus of course distributor and coil.

is there a parts diagram of the 10 pin plug for my motor so i can buy the correct one. im going to need the engine side and boat side harness
i tried to do a search and all i get are oem part numbers with no picture.
I would like to see what im buying.

If you buy used, you will find that over the years there have been 8, 9, 10 and 14 pin wire harnesses depending upon the year and engine. The 14 pin being the newest and is typically used with the newer fuel injected engines. Although they look similar, some harnesses are made for outboards versus engines like yours, that is, wire gauge and colors vary. Do your research with the schematics and determine what sensors you have on your engine. I have found that the typical difference between the 9 pin and the 10 pin is that the 10 pin has the additional wire for the alarm warning sensors.

Also note that some harnesses have different size pins, ex 9 pin harnesses can have 2 large pins or 3 large pins so make sure you have matching connectors in the two pigtails that you need.

As mentioned, best to buy a new universal harness that meets the schematic for you engine.

What you have now works and doesn't need to be replaced unless you want to. It is a universal terminal board kit which is listed in link below, alnog with motor and boat side 10 pin harnesses

The 10 pin connector has only 9 pins. Its called a 10 pin because it has the ability to have 10
