Re: warm boat awfully loud noises . . . AND THAT ALTERNATOR

ok a new update, i went and tried to find the place where i can unscrew the oil pressure sending unit, but i cant find it, there are a few places where things screw in and the holes are empty. could this be the source of my problem? when it gets hot could this be the places where i am losing oil pressure?

wekll i could be a dumb *** and over looked but is the oil pressure sending unit on the right side of the engine when looking at the prop with the prop closest to you? down at the bottom near one of the coolin lines?

In the auto world your motor is a 2L B20A or b20B. It's a marinised car engine.

I can't help you with the alt, my cylmers diagram is showing an externally regulated 6 wire alt.

Aldo

The Seloc manual gives you a wiring diagram for that Alternator I think.
It has probably got an external regulator also if it is the same as my spare unit.
You could ask your Volvo Penta dealer for a wiring diagram.
My books and spare alt are 1,1/4 hours away unfortunately so I can't look at them very easily.

Peter

Just another thought.
The valve clearances are .022" when cold. (In & Ex)
If you have set them too close the piston might be tapping the valve head when it warms up. More risk of this if there is a carbon buildup on the piston crowns.
Was the engine running OK before this last service? If so retrace ALL your steps one by one.
Pull the Oil light switch out of the block and put a pressure gauge in there as a temporary and make certain that you do have oil pressure before you pull the engine out.

Pete

a loud distinct knock that comes in as the engine warms up and gets worse the more u load the engine and also causes a drop in oil pressure is a "run" big-end bearing..

drop the oil pan and it will all be apparent.. look in your filter and it will all be apparent.. the melted bearing material will be all over the place..

new or re-metaled crank plus regrind.. new conrod new set of bearing shells plus anything else the engine needs doing to it while its stripped..

its not a hard job to rebuild an engine.. and shouldnt cost that much if u can find the car engine and use car parts..

volvo use lot of other manufacturers parts being a small set up.. your engine might well be a renault they did use a lot of renault parts back then..

renault parts even if exactly the same come cheaper than volvo parts..

not much point in doing anything else till u fix your engine..

trog100

Though you may have damaged the crank sleeve if the bearing spun. IMHO IF it is a bearing spin, bottom should be rebuilt. If you don't, you'll be doing it in the not too distant future.

rebuilding the bottom block is actually pretty simple. Make sure you MIC the block bearing sleeves and the crank sleeves for proper clearance.

Also, it could be a rod bearing as well.

I can't help you with the location but the shop manual should have somthing on it. If theres nothing there check for other manuals. Maybe even a parts manual. I've seen links here to online manuals but I don't recall any on Volvos. Do a search and see what comes up.
Your going the right way with the mechanical guage. Maybe even get somebody to check it and give a second opinion.

yea, i bought this boat about 3 weeks ago and was told that the top end was just rebuilt. i assume the bottom would have been also but i am not sure. it runs well and doesnt knock at idle only at WOT or revving up under load. i can put it in nuetral and rev it and it wont knock so i dont think its anything with the lower end maybe the guy that rebuil,t it just over looked a few things, HOPEFULLY. again anyone out there that can help me with this 3 wire alt. and the local of the sending unit

how is your motor mounted, no engine mounts right?
It hangs of the transom. To fit anything but a volvo 4 cyl you would need to provide engine mount stringers - BIG job.

If your problems are terminal, find a volvo boneyard in the yellow pages. Secondhand motors are cheap.

Aldo

Yep, B20. Replace the core plugs (welsh plugs/freeze plugs) with brass, change over all the marine peripherals - good to go.

It has engine mounts down in the bilge?

Long as it don't hit the cavitation plate. How much bigger is it then the one on there? What pitch is it?

Best I could find so far on the oil psi sender location is a parts diagram at Doug Russell
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&group=1851&GroupList=1852,1824,1893,1892,1891,1890,1840,1841,1842,1888,1889,1821,1820,1822,1823,1853,185 1,1834,1835,1894,1837,1838,1836,1854,1839,1833,1844,1847,1849,1845,1850,1825,1856,1857,1828,1830,1831,1832,1829,1826,1827,1855,1843,1846,1848
Its kinda vague but its something, looks like its on the side of the block.
