Water pressure rebuilt engine on muffs

Hi All,
After grenading my 115hp in-line 6 I puchased a 1969 125hp in-line 6 that has been completely rebuilt. New powerhead, waterpump, carbs, fuel pumps etc.

Started the motor tonight with the hose and muffs on (and it started first go!!) but no water pressure on my gauge or from the pee hole.

I was thinking of briefly running the engine with the motor in the river just in case it makes some sort of difference.
Anyone have any experience with similar? I don't want to pull the gearbox off.

If this doesn't help, I will pull the gearbox off. Is there a way to check the water passages i.e. a water hose up the intake tube to see if I get some pressure?

Any advice appreciated....

Re: Water pressure rebuilt engine on muffs

Toddski; I've had the same experience, but, most here haven't. I've had two sets of muffs for a '65 Merc 1000. I can't get enough water through the muffs to keep up with the water pump-even at idle.
I made a cheap fixture using a flimsy aluminum food container(Chip Dip)- about 4 1/2" diameter. Put a female hose fitting in the bottom(outside) and strapped it over the water inlet vents with tight bungee cord. Its being flimsy lets it distort to conform to the lower units curve.
Put a closure plate over the opposite side, padded with a thick fold of rags to help it seal. Works well-lots of water!!
Boat in the water is good too if it's close by. Good luck!

I have a 69 1250 and when I run it on muffs, I get some flow out of the tell-tale, but not much. My water comes from a well, and the hose pressure isn't fantastic. When I run the motor in the lake, the tell-tale pressure is very strong. It does seem to make a difference, at least in my case.

Re: Water pressure rebuilt engine on muffs

Ran the motor on the trailer at the boat ramp this morning to make sure all the water intakes were covered.
Got nothing more than a very weak amount of steam out of the pee hole and no pressure on the gauge.
Any ideas?
If I drop the gearbox off can I check the engine for blockages by putting a water hose up the water intake pipe?
Any easy way of checking the water pump other than inspecting the impeller for obvious damage?
I can only guess maybe they forgot to install the key that drives the impeller....???

JasonJ---- you shouldn't run your outboard with well-water. Well water = rust = rust in your outboard = damage later. I would not run that rusty water thru any outboard.

Re: Water pressure rebuilt engine on muffs

Thanks Ryan, my well water is heavily filtered. The outside spigots are on the same line as the filtered drinking water inside. Very clean. I only run it on it once in a year to make sure the motor is running properly before heading to the ramp for launch. Once launched, the boat is in the water until fall.

I would drop it and check it out. It wouldn't surprise me if the key was skipped. Also you can check to make sure the tube that runs from the pump to the powerhead is connected. There is a little O ring that the tube sets in on the pump housing, make sure that is in there. Make sure there is no debris in the intakes or passages leading to the pump. Did you have the pump under water at the ramp?. If not, sometimes it is difficult for the pump to draw up to prime. Good luck....

Re: Water pressure rebuilt engine on muffs

Update - I dropped the gearbox tonight. The copper water tube from the pump to the powerhead was fairly loosely placed inside. It has a seal into the pump and a seal at the top. Both look similar to me. Seal into the pump is no problem but putting the shaft into the top with the seal on is near impossible.

Looking up inside the leg there is a retaining screw and looks like some sort of clamp. The parts book shows this as a seal retainer.

I put the tube in there without the top seal and it sits there ok. Replaced the gearbox and I managed to get some water coming out of the pee hole but unlikely enough. My guess is that I somehow need to get a screwdriver up inide the leg to undo this seal retainer, insert a proper seal and the tube, then tighten up the retainer.

Anyone have experience with this process and can tell me about the type of seal?
