Water pump housing

rookie, so bear with me, when I took off the top housing of the water pump, it lookes like it has something between the cup and the housing. I am guessing it could be a gasket, could be melted plastic. New top housing has a gap that looks like it could accept a seal/gasket. I have the manual, don't see anything, just double checking. Have a sierra kit, drive serial in my sig, mr drive. Thanks for any help.

i asked the saame as mine had black stuff in there. i was told no seal just the slinger that slides on shaft and goes in top but it just sits on top not held by anything.

looks like some melted plastic from an overheat. check the pump base for melting where the shaft comes thru.
