I have used both Amsoil HPI at 50:1 and Saber at 80:1 in my 15 hp Force and it appears I am getting more smoke with the Saber at 80:1 so next test would have to be with the recommended 100:1 mix (Saber) but I am unsure about going that lean.

As I have stated probably years ago now, the Amsoil is formulated to mix the "Bottle" at 100:1. There are no filler oils added to the 100:1 oil. That is why you cannot use it in oil injection engines. If I had to make a bet, mixing the 100:1 oil is probably about the same as 75:1 with a conventional TC-W3 oil. You will be fine using the 100:1 oil at 100:1!

Here in Canada, the price of a quart of Amsoil synthetic (either HPI or Saber) is approx $ 10. and the price to pay for regular Quicksilver Merc is also $ 10. So the reason for using synthetic has to be for other reasons than $$$

Well, I'm in Canada also and the price I pay for Walmart's Supertech 2000 TC-W3 oil is $2.29 per liter (per quart for you non-metric dudes).

I had this decision to make a few years ago and decided that instead of using full synthetic to reduce carbon build-up (and pay through the nose for it) I would use the cheapest oil I can, but ensure I put about 1% by volume of seafoam in all my gas. I feel this set up will keep my cylinders cleaner and most likely my carburetor also. Yes, my motors smoke a little, but only on start up and idle. Once I give em the trottle that trail dissappears nicely (I'm sure it's still there, but I sure can't see it).

Anyway, regular oil with seafoam over full synthetic is my choice. At least until they reduce the cost of the synthetic.

Actually, I have no problem running newer motors on 100:1 Amsoil. However, most of my motors have friction bearings and require a 24:1 mix ratio. I'm just not comfortable running less oil in a motor where the added oil thickness is apparently designed into the bearings.

Also, at 24:1 you get a pretty good cloud of smoke with conventional oil.

I ve used Canadian Tire 2 cycles oils for a long time ... and nothing went wrong with my OB's ... Walmart Tcw3 is probably from a better source ... Please note my price comparison was from Synthetic versa Brand Name (Quicksilver)

I personaly simply like to twikle and fix things that dont need fixing ... (lol) in order to inhence my knowledge base (professional distortion) especialy when it comes to less water polution possibilities.

Makes me not want a 4 stroker !!!!
Always been the same since my first motor cycle !!!

Agreed ... nothing like the smell of a Tc-W3 Castrol mix ... LOL

If you want to keep it sweet stay away from expensive brand names ... Qwicksilver smoke stinks ... lol Seem the low end oil have the best odors ...

Can you add the synthetic oil to the reservior already half full of reg. 2 stroke oil? Just started boating and have a 96 40hp jonhson with vro.

Isn't the short answer to this question "Yes" - aren't all TCW3 oils supposed to be totally compatible?

You are absolutly correct!

This STILL isn't a REAL oil thread until someone shows up to point out that you will be getting a better oil film with far better heat resistance at 100:1 Snake...errr... Amsoil vs. 24:1 70's-spec conventional oil.



As for price: As the price of "fossil" oils climbs higher the synths should look more appealing. I'm still waiting for Wally World to package a full-synth outboard oil. Last time I bought full-synth Super Tech auto oil it was $13/gallon. Even with todays selections and prices I don't see why Pennsoil synthetic TCW3 should sell at Wallys for $24/G. when the very-high-spec Rotella synthetics sell for $20/G.
