Re: What to resin

hey zach.......just dont worry bout it bud.....well walk you right thru it....

buy the wood for the floor now and let it start drying (as well as stringers and transom) i cant remember how deep yer gonna get in to it....but when you say foam....that usually means everything......

resin temps,,,,,around 70 deg.......if your using poly, glass needs to be on everything that resin does.

just get in there and start digging and ripping it all out. it all becomes self explanitory

Re: What to resin

zach.... i just read where your dad said........ "its ok to just glass the top of the deck"

it is...you can do it with no glass or resin at all...........but youll be doing it again soon......keep the moisture off the wood.....

if you are using poly resin.....add glass and resin to the bottom of the deck.....(check the hull ext thread) not just resin alone

if your using epoxy, you dont need glass on the bottom.
then 8 oz on the top....the difference between doing it or not is about 20 years.

and dont forget the edges as well....you must encase the wood.

Re: What to resin

Every piece of wood that you install should at least be coated with a couple of coats of resin on both sides and the edges to seal it. Stuff like the deck should have a layer of matt on the top and even the bottom. Stringers should be fully encased with a few layers fibreglass (resin and glass).

Maybe go to your library and get a book on fibreglassing for reference. I have glassed at temperatures from 60 up to 80 degrees F, the only thing you have to do is vary the amount of catalyst that you add.

You should search this forum, there is a great deal of information to get you started.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Alright, ive gotten everything out already.. i bought the wood and have already cut the pieces for the stringers..now some questions

1. what is better to use the epoxy or the resin?

2. if im understanding this right i should have at least one layer or glass on everything then more on the stringers and top of the deck?

Epoxy is better, but is more expensive. For what you are doing poly is just fine. That is what I used on my boat.

Have two coats of resin on all the wood, glass enclosed stringers, and a layer of matt on the top of the deck.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: What to resin

zach- if this if your first fiberglass job, do yourself a favor and practice on something you don't mind tossing in the trash. grinding off a crappy glassing job from your nice new stringers can really ruin a day...and cost a nice penny too.

glass the under-sides of your deck pieces before putting them in, then glass the top when its in.

Re: What to resin

no pics? lol

inside corners, like where the stringer meets the hull, need to be filled in to round off the corner...called fillet-ing, i don't know why. outside corners, like over the top of the stringer, aren't easy. the stringer, or whatever, needs to have the sharp edge ground off. still, air will want to get under the mat. you have to work with it while not making a mess out of it. the mat will pretty much melt into the resin after a very short while...15 secs.

so, plan ahead. round off sharp corners, fill-in inside corners, pre-cut your cloth to account for bunching. ever see a pattern for making clothing? that kind of trimming can come in handy.

i used 3" and 4" brushes while doing my stringers. wet the area with resin, lay the mat down, slobber on some more resin, jam the brush into the resin covered mat to move the resin deeper, smooth it out. it also helped to do 1 side of the stringer instead of both sides at the same time...in like 3-4' sections, using the fact that it will start to set-up so that when you're on the other side pulling on the mat it will hold and not slide as much. timing is important too, gotta get a feel for temp/humidity and working time.

If you're using epoxy, some household vinegar will clean that off for ya.

Re: What to resin

lot's of acetone, it you get to it early.
also soak in wd40; it gets between the resin and the skin

Re: What to resin

zach, before we go much further...are you using poly resin or epoxy resin?

again, you're going to have choices with what to fill in corners with. if you're using poly resin, there are things you can add to make it thicker. or, you can try PL construction adhesive, it's been a popular choice around here lately. the PL is cheaper but you'll usually have lots of resin on hand for this job so that's sometimes just easier.

i can't really tell what happened in the pic, the mat doesn't show well...you'll want to end up seeing the wood through your fiberglass work. if you can't, you've got air bubbles preventing things from sticking to the wood. get them in the wrong places and you'll have to grind away the bad spot and fix it up.
