What type of paint/coating?

I am ready to paint my boat. I have already sanded the area that I want to paint and finished all the fiberglass work.

I am NOT painting the entire boat. I am only repainting the maroon stripe above the water line. A couple of questions:

1. What type of paint or coating should I use? I want to use something that can be applied with a roller.

2. Do I need to use primer first?

3. Do I need to use some type of clear coat afterward?

I attached a picture of the boat before I started working on it. Again, I only want to paint the stripe. I have already removed the vinyl pin stripe, sanded the stripe and repaired the gouges in the fiberglass.

Oh, yeah one more thing. :D Anyone know where to get a good deal on rub rail kits?

Thanks in advance!

if you are only going to apply it with a roller id just use a enamel paint it will have gloss to it and i am guessing you aren't to stressed on finish so this should see you fine

Re: What type of paint/coating?

If you want the simplicity of using a roller but want a bit better finish, simply use the roller to get a good coat on a few feet of your stripe and the "tip" it off using a paint brush and brushing it back towards your where you started with the roller. Then repeat with the roller and then the brush until you have made it all the way around the boat.

Finding the right rub rail for your boat might take a bit of digging if you want to use the same thing again. There are many rub rail options out there and it may just take a bit of digging on line. I replaced the rub rail on my 27' Whaler and found the OEM replacment at a distributor in FL.

Good luck,

Chuck

Re: What type of paint/coating?

Ok, I bought the paint. I'm using Interlux Brightside with the matching primer. Anyone know what kind of roller and brush to use for applying it? There are like 20 different types of rollers at Lowes.

I will start the final sanding tomorrow IAW the instructions given by Interlux. I have it currently sanded to 80 grit. The instructions say go to 120, I think. I will verify before I go get the supplies. The paint should be here this week. UPS ground is usually not more than 4 days.

I will be keeping tabs on my progress with my camera. I will definitely be posting before and after pics. Thanks for all advice!

...........calm down let the man tinker....;)

Okies.. he tinkered :) .

Really..why would you want to Paint ?

Can you just buff your maroon out.. or do you just want to change the color ?

Dont get my post wrong here..im not badgering ya..Im just asking if you are aware of other options.

Paint is a first or last resort IMHO..and I just dont see why a good looking just fine coating is going to get recoated..

Gel repair is not that hard.. way easier then a full sand/prime/paint/scuff/paint/scuff/paint/scuff ( you get the picture with roll on Brighside thing ).

Please again..dont get me wrong here.. Im not trying to talk you out or into Anything.. just wondering..

Re: What type of paint/coating?

The old paint is really old looking and has numerous imperfections. There were holes where emblems used to be and gouges out of the fiberglass. I have already ordered fire red paint and primer.

What I need to know now is what type of roller to use.

Re: What type of paint/coating?

One trick to using Brightside is to apply very thin coats. I recommend using a china bristle brush. I have tried the rollers recommended here and I had some trouble with them coming apart and leaving flecks of foam in the paint. Brightside has very strong solvents.

When using the brush try to apply as little paint as will cover. Then come back and tip off what you have applied using light strokes with a clean brush. Tip off the paint every foot or so as you apply the paint. The idea is to knock the paint down and prevent applying too much because it will run. Several thin coats are always better, than one thick one. In fact, you should just about be able to see through the first coat.

Look at the Interlux website for instructions on how to apply the paint. A roller will work, but you will still need a tipping brush. There is a technique to applying it to get the best result. Follow the directions closely. It is very different from applying latex in the den.:p

Re: What type of paint/coating?

Thanks so much! I got everything masked off today. Jamestown Distributors shipped the paint and primer this morning. I am hoping to get it before the weekend.

I have watched the Interlux video that shows the tipping technique. I plan on taking my time with this thing. I have all winter to get this project done.

Re: What type of paint/coating?

Finally, the weather warmed up over the last 2 days to get this thing painted. The boat has been in primer for like a month an a half. Here are some pics. The before pic is posted at the beginning of this thread. These are all pics of the prep work prior to priming.

Pics of the paint... I had not yet removed the masking tape, but I did today and it really looks good. Not bad for a $500 boat! New rub-rail is the next project. The vinyl cushions and seats will also be on the list before the motor.
