Re: What would you do ?

I was going to get a new drill that came with the 18V compatible batteries but decided the cost wasn't worth it.

Probably better to just buy a whole new drill to buy the batteries. Not sure these are the same batteries as what I posted before though
Amazon.com: DEWALT DCD760KL 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Cordless Compact Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver Kit: Home Improvement

Here are these batteries
http://www.amazon.com/DeWALT-DC9181...1395759865&sr=8-7&keywords=dewalt+18V+lithium

Those batteries are only 800 cycles whereas the other ones you posted are 2000. The price reflects that too. You get what you pay for....

Yes, I didn't look at them closely.

I was curious about 14.4 lith's for my stuff. In my search, one observation is the the Ni-cad XRPs don't have a memory. May be a go between from the standard ni-cads and lithium.... I believe the XRPs are 1200 cycles. Those liths are spendy and a guy needs a lith charger too..... Probably would be good for someone who uses their tools a lot.....

I did see the cycle times between the posted examples as well. And I need to get the best for the outlay. Even though I have a lot of battery powered hand tools, my usually usage these days are pneumatic tools. So the newer Lithium offerings should solve that memory issues. And since most all my DeWalt battery powered tools are of the 18 volt types, one or two batteries should do the trick...I hope! I see no need to outfit everyone of them with a new Lithium battery. Can't use but one at a time...so two, maybe three new Lithium batteries at the most should be sufficient!

Re: What would you do ?

I have 8 Liths for my Ryobi stuff now, I normally look for the special priced kits, that include a couple of tools and a couple of batteries, that way I update my tools to the newer technology and get batteries to run my older tools as well, I picked one of the kits, that had a 18v drill, Impact gun, 2 batteries and a charger with a carry bag for $69.98, if you get lucky, I have seen Home Depot also run special purchases on the Dewalt stuff as well, I have duplicated some tools, but still paid less for the kit than I would just for the batteries.

I've seen that too MTboatguy. Sometime the kits are the better choice... I'll also keep watch for such. I can't give up my DeWalt tools though, I like them that much... Their battery skill circular saw is a life saver indeed... Can carry it to large sheet goods and cut them down and finish them off in the shop without handling such big pieces...

Re: What would you do ?

Problem for me is I have an 18V reciprocating saw, a 14.4V drill and a 7.2V screw driver.

Eventually I will bite the bullet and go all Lithium. For now, it's easier easier to rebuild the battery packs for less than $15. I have rebuilt 7 of these so far. I have it down to around 20 minutes or so.

Do you guys use the impact gun much? I see these all the time in the kits but not sure if I would ever really use it.

Bruce,

When I bought the kit with the drill and impact, I was primarily looking to get the two batteries that came with it and figured I would give the impact away, but I am surprised, I have used it quite a bit for smaller projects, it works quite well for those rusted bolts and nuts that you normally bust a knuckle on.

I would think it would be most useful putting in long lag bolts into wood. Currently, I use my air ratchet for that. Obviously, not super portable or convenient.

I haven't seen anyone mention rebuilding the NiCad packs with Nickle Metal Hydride batteries. It seems like this would be the ideal solution. The cells should be readily available. You avoid the memory effect of NiCad. You get more charge cycles and more capacity. And your same chargers should work.

NiMh would require a different charger.

Re: What would you do ?

NiMH has a slightly different charge profile and the charger might miss the peak. When I bought batteries for my rebuilds I was thinking about NiMH as well but decided against it since my chargers weren't nimh compatible.
