where does o ring go

i have recently dropped the foot on my 60 horse johnson to inspect water pump. their is a small o ring that i am not sure where it came from. it is just big enough to slide down the skinny part of the shaft<br /><br />thanks in advance for any info<br />ps motor is early 80's model

iceman....if the upper splines on the driveshaft has a grove at the base of them, that's where the oring goes.

dont forget to grease the shaft especially where it goes into the power head it will make it easyer to take apart next time around. i also anti-seize everything so there is not stuck bolts next time u wanna take it apart
