I have 2 140 johnsons. Ones a 1980('78 powerhead) 140hp johny and just picked up another, a 1988 140hp. Both motors run great. Both have the v6 lowers. Only reason I picked up the '88 was the price was really right and it was clean.

I now have to decide which one to use, and which one to sell. If I remember corectly, the '80 is a crossflow and the '88 is a looper. Which one should I keep, condition not being an issue. Either one a better engine? Both basicly the same beast? Info needed.

Help.

1988 HANDS DOWN!!!! The 88 is the prop rated power and will outperform anything 1983 or earlier....... it should even blow away any early (pre 1984) 150's

Looper is a great motor with more power and economy.

If the 1980/78 Hybred has a V6 gearcase it certainly didn't come that way from the factory. Perhaps they both have V4 gearcases?

The V-4 changed to the V-6 gearcase in 1984. Here is a good history write up http://www.glmmarine.com/HistoryJohnEvinV4.html

In 1984 the V4 commericial models may have had the V6 case(canadian brochure doesn't show the commercial models) but the standard recreational V4 crossflows kept the smaller case. My 1987 brochure shows the commercial V4 crossflow with the V6 case. In 1987 all the standard V4. crossflows and loopers had the V4 case. Looking in the 1988 brochure, shows the looper with the small case too. 13x19 prop

now I have to go check. I know the props are interchangable. I was almost shure they were both 15 spine gearcases. I do know the lowers are not original to either motor. now I have to take a trip to the shop sometime.

oh, and just to double check. the 1980 is a wide motor with a bubble back. Making it a crosflow. The 1988 is a more narrow motor. I'm thinking its a looper. Is that correct? Hard to give details with them not being here to look at.

The loopers are much larger blocks. At least the 90 degree models are. All the loopers do have an exhaust passage shape that does bulge out a bit but it is an integral part of the block. On the crossfow the bubble back is bolted to the block. Any chance you could post a couple of pics of the engines?
