JB,

Truly sorry to hear that. Built here, yes.

Profits here-NO!

Tilt up (concrete) plants are cheap to build and will reap enormous profits for the foriegn owned companies. However, ALL the profits go to whatever country they call home. Toyota-Japan, Nissan-France, Kia-Korea, Suzuki-Japan, Mazda-USA.

If they mess up the market, no harm done to their botton line, just fold up and go elsewhere.

If the US companies, can't compete-so be it. The US economy will suffer when its backbone is broken. It will be broken. People want $30K SUV's but are not willing to pay someone $45.00 an hour to build one. Hence, your Toyotas-not UAW made-for now.

For you Dodge fans, that's Germany. Totally owned by: Daimler-Benz (DCX).

Heinz wrote:
"fullsize V8 American truck the most dependable, decent mileage, safe, reasonably priced, with good performance around? I'd want 4 wheel drive, 4 door crewcab, short bed, V8, tow package, auto trans., pwr everything."

A close friend of mine asked my advise four years ago with the same order. He needed 3 trucks to replace his ageing fleet. He erects steel buildings.
I promptly sent him to the local Ford dealer for matching F250 Power stroke diesels, Crew cab, 4x4, A/T.
He averages 18MPG and has over 200k on all of them. He's needed a couple water pumps, a master cylinder, lots of brakes and tires. He does lots of towing.
There are some battery replacements also.

Ford really did this truck right.
Das beste oder nicht. ;)

Don't see too many 1976 Ford's or Dodges around, but I do see alot of 1970's Chevy's still out there working.
Here's my 1976 Dodge. Never been inside, parked for a few years after I sold the 360 out of it. Put a 400 in it. 14 second 1/4 et's, and faithfully tows my 24' pontoon anywhere. They're not all gone, lol.
-Spiker

http://community-2.webtv.net/spike440/MOPARPOWER/

NOSLEEP:

The limited slip differential is available for front of F150 Supercrew. It ALLOWS turning on dry pavement...the problem is that it does not without it. Without limited slip front and rear you have 4-wheel drive, WITH limited slip front and rear you have all-wheel drive, it's important to know the difference!

I'm a Ford fan..have been for years.

A friend has one of those Dodge V10 jobs.
It has more power than you can imagine, and I'm quite impressed...HOWEVER...The brakes have went out 3 times, and several body parts both interior and exterior have fallen off or just plain broke. I am very impressed with their engines. Too bad they can't make a body and frame that could handle them!

I have an older 1/2 ton Ford, and a 1 1/2 ton full size, as well as my new Ranger. All of them are bulls. Wouldn't buy anything else.

My 2-cents.

H.

MrBILL, but Ford dont make it! I've sold thousands
of them over the years. It is not an available
option. Perhaps you are thinking of antilock
brakes. If you put limited slip on the steering
axle ,you would have a very difficult time
steering it. not to mention tearing the front
axles out. Some off road 4x4'ers will modify their
trucks to include limited slip on the front axle
but they dont drive them back and forth to work
they use them for offroad only. Check it out!
Ford did offer it as an option in the late
seventies and early 80s but discontinued it
because of warranty problems.
Go to www.ford.com and try to find the option.

Hmmm.

Your point seems valid, DJohns, but.

I don't think that the thousands of Americans who profit from the assembly, shipping, selling and supporting of the product would agree.

Hundreds of contractors, subcontractors and Dealers make wages and profits from their work, thousands of American make good wages for their work.

Bottom line profit does go to the stockholders of Toyota (including many Americans), but long before the bottom line is reached many thousands of Americans earn and profit. All of that money goes into the American economy, not the Japanese economy, and it is a lot more money than the bottom line profit.

Whatever reasons we choose to select or reject a product, let's use facts, not oversimplifications.

djohns19

Toyota stock is traded on the NYSE, so any company profits should be available for anyone who invests.

Not sure about Toyota/UAW, but years ago, U.S. Nissan employees felt that the company treated them well-enough, that they saw no need for organized labor, therefore rejected joining the UAW.

For dependability and good service, I can't say anything bad about Ford trucks. We have a '98 and an '03 and neither has had to have a repair of any kind. The '03 is head and shoulders above the '98 in performance and handling.

Re: Which V8 fullsize truck best? Dependable?

I have been reading this post as new people post to it.

All new trucks are the same. If you look at spec sheets on them there is almost no difference. They all have about the same hp and torque.

So, it comes down to this, which truck suits you, in the way of looks, both inside and out?

I suggest you do a little homework and get out and testdrive some. Take you boat to the dealership and tell them you want to pull it around a little. The dealership I use to work at had no problems with that.

JB I am a bit confused!! Maybe I took your post wrong. It does not make any sense that the money spent here in this country to build the Toyotas is greater than the bottom line profit. This means the cost outwiegh the profit. This cant be! I have to go with DJohns on this one. Toyota takes the lions share of money back to the homeland.

JB,

The "transplants" are not playing on the same playing field. I'm not oversimplifying.

As an example: The transplants are not unionized and do not pay union scale wages. Their benefits are also severely curtailed compared to domestics. Is that fair-probably. Who's fault is it? The domestics and the American society.

The transplants do not have to keep so much much of their selling gross in reserve for tort actions. They are not frequently sued because there are few assets in the USA to collect from. Very little cash and who wants an assembly plant or an office as compensation?

djohns19

Your term, "transplants" reminds me of the recent X-Men film, where just because some people are different, that always a bad thing and they should go :(

Some auto plants, including the Nissan Motor Plant in Smyrna Tenn, are not UAW, because the American employees do not want it to be.
http://fyi.cnn.com/2001/BUSINESS/10/04/nissan/

Concerning legal actions against Japanese auto companies, there are plenty and here is one from the U.S. Supreme Court
http://www.tlpj.com/briefs/geier3.htm

Japan-bashing is nearly not as much fun anymore, especially since their economy is much worse than ours.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1788234.stm

Marty

Re: Which V8 fullsize truck best? Dependable?

Maybe I wasn't clear, Flahthead.

The corporation, largely owned by Americans like myself, makes about 7% profit on a sold truck, I think.

The dealer who sells it makes about 10%, of which about half is commission to the sales rep.

The costs for assembly, shipping, advertizing, facilities, facilities management, R&D (USA)etc, etc, are about 50%. The rest is materials and what manufacturing is done in Japan.

By my math, that is about 60% of the sales dollar staying in the USA, not counting my dividends.

Is the objection really because the workers don't pay membership dues into UAW? That is their choice, I believe. If Toyota or whomever makes them happy enough that they reject the union what is the gripe?

BTW, Ford, GM, and Daimler-Chrysler also use a lot of foreign manufactured parts and foreign assembly. Why? UAW greed?

All,

I am not a fan of nor a member of the UAW.

It really isn't the choice of the average employee on whether or not he/she wants to be a member. It is a condition of employment, not from the corporate side but from the union side.

When I use the term "transplants" I am simply stating that their manufacturing facilites have been transplanted here on US soil. The corporate head is still a 100% foreign owned company.

Marty,

I'm not Japan Bashing. They have some great products.

I just do not believe a lot of people understand the economics of all of this and how our it erodes our sovereignty.

Just a note here on the Ford gas powered trucks.

If you buy one, just make sure you carry extra oil with you because the new Triton motors are notorious for burning oil.

My freinds 2001 Excursion only gets about 400 miles per quart of oil, and Ford claims that this is normal operation.

Sounds expensive to me, especially if you use synthetic oil.

A note about the Toyota pick-up.

It is NOT a full sized truck.

You cannot lay a 4 x 8 piece of plywood flat in the bed.

This is the criteria required to be considered a full-sized truck, and Toyota is decieving the buying public by advertising this truck as full-sized.

This truck is actually a mid-size, like the Dodge Dakota.
