I was ANCHORED about 150 feet off an island (not in the channel) in long island sound........napping.......and all of a sudden I saw a big *** sail and guess what, less than 2 feet from the stern of my boat a sail boat passed me!!! :eek:

He had some kids on the boat so I held my mouth shut. However my friend said to him as he passed "Learn how to sail jerk!!!" to which he did not respond.

WTF?!?!

Long island sound is HUGE and this guy had to freakin come that close??

Anyone else ever get almost hit by a sail boat??

The rules rank vessels by order of priority, giving the highest priority to vessels which have the most difficulty maneuvering. The ranks, starting with the highest, are as follows:

1. Not under command - a vessel which, for whatever reason, cannot control where it goes.
2. Restricted in ability to maneuver - a vessel which, because of the tasks it is doing, cannot change direction or speed easily, or at all.
3. Constrained by draft - a vessel which must stay away from shallower water to avoid running aground.
4. Vessel which is fishing or trawling (but not trolling).
5. Sailboat under sail or a boat being paddled or rowed - though as soon as the sailboat uses an engine for power it must follow the same rules as a power boat, whether or not it has sails up.
6. Power.

This means that a power boat must stay clear of a sailboat; power boats and sailboats of boats must stay clear of boats which are fishing or trawling; power boats, sailboats and fishing boats must stay clear of vessels which are constrained by draft; power boats, sailboats, fishing boats and vessels constrained by draft must stay clear of vessels which are restricted in their ability to maneuver; and all of them must stay clear of any vessel which is not under command.

Did I miss something because I saw nothing about a vessel at anchor? I guess he should have hurried up and pulled the anchor up to get out of the way.

My vessel was not under command at the moment. So I had right of way ;)

Had a collision occurred the first thing the CG would have looked for was his anchoring signal. If not anchor signal was not displayed per regulations then the collision would have been his fault.

I'm guessing he didn't:confused: and doesn't:confused: know what were talking about. as shown by lack of response to my question

thajeffski, not the answer you wanted, but...You both have a degree of culpability. You, for what i gather, did not have an anchoring dayshape visible. so shame on you

as for him...rules clearly state, that you must go everything in your power with due regard to good seamenship to avoid collision. and within 2 feet is not with due regard to good seamenship. so his bad as well.

Re: Who else has almost got hit by a sailboat ??

I'll admit my ignorance on this one, as anchoring isn't something I do.

Perhaps CG would find power boat owner at fault (or partial fault???), but what kind of dummy points his sail boat at an immobile object? Do they not have rudders? I'm pretty sure they do. Holy crap!!!.... what if there was a huge rock..... or SHORE?!?!??!..... I guess sailboat captain would just have to hit it.

Anyone who's paying attention will know whether a vessel is moving or not, and regardless, you've gotta be an idiot to assume 100% right-of-way and bank on the fact that the "other guy" will move for you. "Other guy" might get the ticket, but you've damaged your boat and proven yourself as a jackwad. ;)

Not like this sailboat had only one option for course.

BTW.... I always yield to sailboats and boats that ARE NOT MOVING..... anchored or not.... I don't run at them. Whether they've got something in the water, a swimmer on the opposite side I can't see, engine trouble- it don't matter- I PAY ATTENTION TO MY SURROUNDINGS and avoid them.

Seems like the anchored boat would qualify for #2.

If a sailboat receives more priority by shutting down its gas-power yet still has sail power, you would think that another boat with its power completely shut down - and has no sail power - would receive higher priority than the sailboat.

Does the anchoring marker grant you that?

An anchored boat is #1 on the list.

Tell us more about day anchor marks.

Not justifying but explaining: sailboats when tacking on a reach often go to the extreme edge of a course before tacking, and then seem to tack at the last minute. When they get a good head of steam up they tend to keep going. If they want to "swerve" they are limited as to how much they can head up (turn into the wind) and they slip a lot on a reach. Plus they think they own the river.

Got it. Interpreted "not under command" meant nobody aboard.

ok here is the best i can find from the coast guard wed sight. it seems after home land security, they have changed there web sight and the rules. the old sight and rules were much easier to follow and understand and you would have been a fault for not displaying a black 6" i think ball hanging where it is visible from all directions in the day time.

now it looks like you don't have to. that assuming your boat is less than 7 meters

RULE 30: ANCHORED VESSELS AND VESSELS AGROUND
RULE 31: SEAPLANES
Rule 30 (a) A vessel at anchor shall exhibit where it can best be seen:
    1. in the fore part, an all-round white light or one ball;
    2. at or near the stern and at a lower level than the light prescribed in subparagraph (i), an all-round white light.
(b) A vessel of less than 50 meters in length may exhibit an all-round white light where it can best be seen instead of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule.
(c) A vessel at anchor may, and a vessel of 100 meters and more in length shall, also use the available working or equivalent lights to illuminate her decks.
(d) A vessel aground shall exhibit the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) or (b) of this Rule and in addition, if practicable, [Inld] where they can best be seen;
    1. two all-round red lights in a vertical line;
    2. three balls in a vertical line.
(e) A vessel of less than 7 meters in length, when at anchor not in or near a narrow channel, fairway or where other vessels normally navigate, shall not be required to exhibit the shape prescribed in paragraphs (a) and (b) of this Rule.
(f) A vessel of less than 12 meters in length, when aground, shall not be required to exhibit the lights or shapes prescribed in subparagraphs (d)(i) and (ii) of this Rule.
(g) A vessel of less than 20 meters in length, when at anchor in a special anchorage area designated by the Secretary, shall not be required to exhibit the anchor lights and shapes required by this Rule. [Inld]

I'm sure that guy was as pale faced as you were. Sailboats aren't exactly riding on rails, and sometimes you are at the mercy of a wind direction change or worse, a sudden wind lull while coming about.

I don't see many sail boats thinking they own the water. It just isn't the most precise means of navigating waters. You can't just point your boat in whatever direction you want and move forward. I wouldn't be shocked if that guy had plenty of space left initially and lost his buffer in a wind direction shift. Personally, I would have yelled "Well that was close!" to him, as he did manage to avoid the collision! Riding nature is random at the best of times, and having sailed plenty, I understand the challenge of it. You can get upset if he collided and then tried to blame you for it. Otherwise, we all enjoy the water because it is part of nature. And sometimes we forget we aren't always the masters of it.

Seriously? Balls?

my boat is 19.5 feet - so I think I'm exempt from all of those except at night.

And yes, at night I do put my anchor light up and on.

Re: Who else has almost got hit by a sailboat ??

as for the original question.
Anyone else ever get almost hit by a sail boat??
i'll say yes. i don't anchor much. but i sure do a lot of drifting with no one at the helm. every year i get a few sailboaters that just have to pass just as close as possible to me. for what reason i don't know. granted my local fishin hole is only 2k sq acres. it's still plenty big enough for me and them. there might not be more than a couple of boats out, and a darn sailboat will pass me by so close i can touch them... it irritates me too... there's no reason for it... and as far as i'm concerned, dangerous as well... one false move on their part and they'll likely ram me.. i won't like that real well...
