the way i read it now you don't need a light either for a vessel less than 7 meters.

the only question that would leave is if--- you were in fairway or where other vessels normally navigate---

all i know about that is the only two times i was out on long island sound there were boats and ships all over so???

I was just a little way off of an island, not even CLOSE to deep water. I was amazed he didn't nail his keel on the bottom to be honest.

Well, 7 meters is only about 21ft. I see many many boats here on lake erie, bays rivers etc anchored and have never seen any daytime markers. The only time you will see a marker around here is at night with the white all around on. That's not to say its right, or legal, but you just don't see them. Basically the same thing as most boats don't have the daytime orange/black distress flag that is required. If only they could spell out the rules in simpler form.

Not that it matters that much but 7 meters = 22.9ft. If I interpret the regulation correctly any boater under the said 50 meters can use their anchor light (white all-round) to signal vessel at anchor. It does not specify during reduced visibility (weather, dark) so the applicability would be at any time. What do you think?

Jeffski just flip the anchor switch next time you nap...:)

Good post/discussion. I always enjoy learning how to be a better part of the boating community.

You do realize that sailboats can only go so close to the wind maybe the sailboat couldn't get any closer to the wind and other than turn around and almost hittin land and he cut it to close but he wouldn't have hit yyou sailors have a bigger risk of getting hit by a power boat but all boaters power paddle or sail have inexperinced people it's not everyone

I'm an experienced sailor.

Sailboats can go wherever they want. It's just that one way is fast. And the other is slow.

He could have turned into the wind 5-10-20-30 feet before me....made a U and then caught the breeze with more than enough space.

I have never seen anyone use an anchor marker, fresh or salt water. Never even seen them in stores, unless you consider a mooring ball to be an anchor marker.

There is also no Coast Guard regulation requiring the use of an anchor marker. Probably why most people don't even know what one is.

My guess is the near collision was just poor planning and lack of experience on the skippers part. Did you notice lots of scraps and bent bow pulpit as he passed? :D

I guess he should have hurried up and pulled the anchor up to get out of the way.

:eek:I agree, why didnt you wake up and hoist anchor, crank up and just move before the guy even got there.:D
some people are just a holes. they expect the world to just get up and move when they come by. I bet he'd have something to say to you if the boat shoe was on the other foot.

mark i agree with every thing you said but the reg. part and that came off this sight

http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/mwv/regulations/regs_home.htm

I didn't find anything in the Safety publication, and I didn't know about that site. Good info, I'm going to save that link. I still couldn't find anything about anchor markers, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exit. If you can, please post the link to the page with the info. I like to know when I'm not following the rules.

BTW, most of the regulations do not apply to boats under 20 meters or so:

Vessels of less than 20 meters are not required to exhibit anchor lights or shapes required by rule 30 of the Inland Navigation Rules (33 U.S.C. 2030).

These regs can get confusing. What is rule 30?

rule 30 is on this page. while under 21 ft boats are exempt from some of the rules there are some conditions that if they meet they need to compile with
i have seen these balls fore sale. they're not balls but card board or light metal. they are flat discs so as to store in a small place. they slot or hinge to each other like this if looking down or straight up + ;
when hung they look like a ball unless of course your right over or under one

I was just kdding about the sailors think they own th river. Just a reflexive post, having grown up under the "stinkpot v. windbag" wars, and having been on both sides!

You can use markers or all around white (i.e. anchor) lights. Locally most everyone use their lights except for the sail boats.

Note the requirements for exemption for vessels under 7M (21') in length. They are only exempt when at anchor not in or near a narrow channel, fairway or where other vessels normally navigate. The ?where other vessels normally navigate? is the kicker.

I all fairness to the OP, you can?t really place blame on either party. Not enough information to make the determination one-way or the other who was at fault.

Rule 30
(a) A vessel at anchor shall exhibit where it can best be seen:

in the fore part, an all-round white light or one ball;
at or near the stern and at a lower level than the light prescribed in subparagraph (i), an all-round white light.

(b) A vessel of less than 50 meters in length may exhibit an all-round white light where it can best be seen instead of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule.

(c) A vessel at anchor may, and a vessel of 100 meters and more in length shall, also use the available working or equivalent lights to illuminate her decks.

(d) A vessel aground shall exhibit the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) or (b) of this Rule and in addition, if practicable, [Inld] where they can best be seen;

two all-round red lights in a vertical line;
three balls in a vertical line.
(e) A vessel of less than 7 meters in length, when at anchor not in or near a narrow channel, fairway or where other vessels normally navigate, shall not be required to exhibit the shape prescribed in paragraphs (a) and (b) of this Rule.
(f) A vessel of less than 12 meters in length, when aground, shall not be required to exhibit the lights or shapes prescribed in subparagraphs (d)(i) and (ii) of this Rule.

(g) A vessel of less than 20 meters in length, when at anchor in a special anchorage area designated by the Secretary, shall not be required to exhibit the anchor lights and shapes required by this Rule. [Inld]

that was kind of my point but you said it better.

if sailboat was there, dos that fill the requirement that other vessels navigate there?

Re: Who else has almost got hit by a sailboat ??

Oh my god.

Today, I was at least 5 miles off shore and a GOD DAMN SAIL BOAT almost ran me the **** over!!!!

This time I have pics. (have to get them from my female friend, BUT I WILL POST THEM!)

There was 5 miles of water to my right and like 25 to my left!!

I was not anchored, I was adrift and this ****ing idiot sail boat could not adjust his course by 1 degree!!!!I waited until he was ontop of me to move.

I can't believe this BULL**** he was the ONLY boat I saw out in the middle of the sound today.

He was probably just goofing off and saw you there and decided to come over and show off his boat, do you honestly think he was trying to ram you? I think it would be kinda cool myself , it wouldn't have bothered me, long as I wasn't into some tail.

cmon jaxnil, you waited 6 minutes for a response and then condemn the guy for lack of a response? It sounds like classic target fixation, you go where you look. Was your lady friend on the deck in a bikini?
