Trying to make sure that our 1978 70hp evinrude is timed right. Used Joe Reeves method but the timing will not change when adjusting the neoprene bracket on the plate that the roller cam rides on. Have good spark on each cylinder, carbs rebuilt, new lines on everything, new primer bulb, tank vented, etc.. have to pump primer bulb to keep it going at WOT and it will want to die at idle after about three or so minutes in gear. Can bump the key at idle in gear and it will pick back up. Losing patience. Can't find an air leak anywhere.

Fireman, sounds like a fuel pump issue to me. If you have to squeeze the primer bulb to keep it running, it's a sign the pump is bad.

Are you trying to change the idle timing? Joe Reeves method is for adjusting the WOT timing, which is done on the long screw under the flywheel accessible right behind the starter. Idle timing is supposed to take care of itself as long as the throttle link arm length is correct and the cam roller is hitting on the scribe mark.

Correct and I have been in contact with Joe. It is set correctly now found air leaks behind numbers 2 and 3 carbs. Fresh rebuilds with new gaskets. Can spray carb cleaner on the back of 2 and 3 and it will kill the engine. Even tried a small amount of permatex and the same result. any help is appreciated. Ready to do the primal scream on this thing.

Cracks in the carb castings? Float bowl protruding beyond casting? Float bowl gasket to big? Just thoughts...

I appreciate oldc but everything appears factory. No visible cracks or flaws. New gaskets from rebuild kit lined up perfectly.

all new. Like I said, even tried a little permatx to make sure they are sealed.
