I'm looking at getting a 1985 Johnson 115 to replace my 1980 Johnson 115. The marine guy I'm getting it from says they'll work, as long as its got the big red plug, just want to make sure its all good to plug in and go.

thanks

My understanding is that if the cannon plugs are the same color you are ok. I am sure others will chime in with their advice.

Ok, got the motor today, got it bolted on. One question, it is a little different, it had the big red plug. But the control box?? for the tilt, and where the wires go for the tilt sensor for the trim gauge on the new motor, go into the engine cover to a box in there. On my old motor they go into a box which is inside the boat bolted to the transom? So do I just connect the red plug plus battery cables?? and I'm good to go??

is the new tilt pump 2 or 3 wire harness. are the plugs still on the harnesses coming out of the box?

Ok I think it's 3 like the old one, I'll have to look when I get home. Right now there is wires that come off the trim switch and go to the trim gauge then from there go to the control box that is mounted to the transom. So the new motor looks like all the control box is mounted under the engine cover, so I may have to extend the wires? I'll have to take some pics later and post them up.

Ok, here are some pics. Hopefully someone can help me out with this.

Here is the old box that is inside the boat, I think it controlled the tilt and trim sensor.

And here is all the new stuff inside the new engine.

Connector not hooked up?

Re: Will my controls work on newer engine?

Your new motor is wired for a two wire trim motor that should be on the PT&T. You will need to alter the control PT&T harness slightly. You won't be needing the old solenoid box.

5 socket plug is to the control, red positive, blue and green are the up and down. others sender. the " T " socket goes to the tilt motor. just blue and green match colors on motor. harness connects to wire on control.

Thanks but I'm not totally following ya. Right now the wires from the tilt button where you have drawn the red line, go directly up to the tilt gauge, then there is 3 wires that come from up there back to the control box, the wires from the tilt motor are already connected up and go to the control box that is already set up, the only plug that isn't connected is the 5 pin one there.

Re: Will my controls work on newer engine?

Looking at the wiring diagram above that EZEKE posted, looks like the wires come from the tilt control at the Helm, to the motor and connect to the 5pin harness plug. Then 2 wires from that plug, BLK/TAN AND WHITE/TAN, go up to the trim gauge?? Is that right? So looks like I need to do a complete rewire of the trim system? I wish I had the proper harness plug to go to that 5 pin connector, maybe I'll see if I can order one? Dam, I really want to use the boat this week, supposed to be the last nice week of weather.

Re: Will my controls work on newer engine?

The three wires that control the trim and tilt are the red/white, blue/white and green/white on either system and they are the only required ones, whether you have a control mounted, dash mounted or auxiliary switch.

If you follow the three leads from the control to the relay box, it's hard to foul it up.

The other two wires are for the trim gauge and run to the variable resistor mounted on the inside of the port transom bracket.
