The new OS is supposed to come out in 3 weeks. Anybody have firsthand knowledge of how well it works, memory usage, etc.?

I'm currently running W2K and it's getting time to be thinking about upgrading. Will I be able to just upgrade or will I have to buy a whole new OS and reformat from the get-go?

I skipped XP and Vista, thank goodness! :D

Re: Windows 7

We have been using the beta version at our school in Ghana with no issues. The teachers are LOVING it. I will be going over later this month and get some first hand knowledge.

Windows 7 works very well...I have been using it almost a full year now...been in on the early beta testing...All Windows 7 is...is a stripped down version of Vista that works...

I have had NO issues at all with Windows 7..everything I install works...

it runs best on 2gig of ram or more and a dual core CPU...

if you have an older rig then I would suggest upgrading that as well...anything from the C2D, C2Q or AMD from 754 up...the 754 is single core but still the 64bit is very nice...

I am running the 64bit OS myself as I have long past the 32bit stuff...

MS offered the RC-7000 fro several months and you should have tried that...those are the best ways to try...

XP is miles better than anything previous...I still run XPpro on my server...

most didnt like XP due to its activation process and as long as you are legit there is no worries...

I have 6 PCs in the home and 5 of those are running Win7 currently

Sounds like W7 may not work for me. I have an old IBM ThinkCentre with a single 2.4gHz processor and 512mb of RAM.

Dang.

Re: Windows 7

I'm a heavy Mac user, and I must say, I am impressed with Windows 7.

I've been rocking the beta for a month or so for school work, and it has worked well under "Boot Camp" with my MacBook. With a Core 2 Duo and 2GB RAM, it works quite well. I don't know if I'll purchase it when it becomes available, but it has made my occasional time in Windows much more enjoyable.

Re: Windows 7

it will run with 512 but it aint gonna be fast...

I have run it on a 2.4ghz socket 754 with 512mb of ram and a video card and it does pretty good...although it isnt going to be really great once it needs more ram...

My system is fast enough for my uses, other than iboats loading slowly. Everything else is quick. I sometimes run into issues where IE6 isn't supported, but that is very rare. Maybe once or twice a year.

Guess I'll just keep on keepin' on for now.

Is there an apple 2c work around? Seriously, I am hoping that there driver database is more robust than thier attempt with Vista. Half of my stuff would not work and still doesn't

MS writes generic drivers for the most popular hardware. If your hardware doesn't work, blame the company who made it, not some 3rd party (in this case, MS). That said, I have noticed a much expanded driver base for Win7 via Windows Update, but you still need to get online to hit it. If you have some weird chinese knockoff network card, you will still need the OEM driver disk to reach all of the Internets(tm).

I have been using Win7 Ultimate for about 5 months and am very pleased with it. So pleased, in fact, I would have to say this is the first time Microsoft has ever completed an Operating System prior to shipping it. There are still minor bugs, mainly interface bugs, but all in all, I have not regretted upgrading from Vista. I am even running the x64 (64bit) version with absolutely no hiccups. Finding x64 versions of software is getting far easier than it used to be. Having 4GB RAM and a 768MB RAM video card, I also benefited from the expanded memory access of the 64bit version.

Is it faster than Vista? Not really. I haven't noticed any super speed-up, but then again, it is a polished OS with usability in mind and it still runs as fast, which is a step up in anyone's book.

I would say, the best part of Win 7.. it uses the exact Vista driver framework, so your existing Vista drivers will work just fine until a Win 7 native driver is released. Some manufacturers aren't bothering with Win 7 drivers, simply because the existing Vista ones work just fine. Drivers are one thing which delays many many people from upgrading, simply because tons of hardware is barely supported when it is new, forget after 2-3 years later when a new OS comes out.

The best polish MS added to Windows 7 is... English! A quick example of this is a right click on the desktop now lets you jump right to the 'Screen resolution' page. In all previous versions you had to click 'properties'. What users instinctively equate desktop properties with screen resolution? None. A close second on the improvements list? When you enter the control panel, you can simply type the setting you wish to change and it will filter the list down to only what you want. Amazingly simple and amazingly effective! (The same goes for the start menu, by the way, which was partially present in Vista)

All in all, I'm impressed that MS, a company of mediocre products for the last several years, finally listened to the customer base and created an OS with the user's world in mind, rather than trying to force the user into their world.

Yes the driver base for Win7 is much better than Vista was...

I havent run across anything that hasnt worked...except for a soundcard but on the reboot after install it installed a driver on it's own....I have yet in the 100s of Win7 trial installs yet to supply a driver....

the only ones I have had to redo is video card drivers when I needed a CUDA driver for Folding@Home....

Re: Windows 7

Well, that 1gig of RAM shoots me down. Bummer.

Just add more RAM. It's cheap enough for most RAM and guaranteed you can find a step by step guide searching Google on how to do it. Probably one of the easiest upgrades you can do for yourself.

You will need a new computer for Windows 7
There is not a prayer of it working on your older system.

Nah. Not worth it... proprietary RAM for my machine. Knowing how to do the job isn't the issue, I've built my own systems before. Just not worth putting any money into the machine. Hell, I bought it used 4 years ago for $100. LOL :D

Yup.

But, rather than plopping down a buncha money for a new machine, I'll just keep what I have because it still works. Sorta like old boats doncha know! :D

Besides, I have an identical complete backup machine too. I can go a long time before I need to buy new.

Re: Windows 7

heh I just got rid of the last of the old PC stuff...old PII stuff...and they did install Win7 on a PIII and it worked fine so you may be fine...

heck try it on the "identical backup" pc...thats what i do...I test them on beds...

do any of you know that if your board and CPU has Virtualization that Win7 has built in XP virtualization...?

meaning you can run XP inside of Win7....just like VMware on any PC...(VM= Virtual Machine)

That's a thought, but I really don't wanna spend bucks on a new OS just hoping that it'll work okay.

Even if I spent $50 (50% of purchase price of the machine itself) on a 1gig RAM upgrade, it still may be slower than my current setup as the new software struggles with the old hardware.

Ya know?
