I have a ERude 40HP model # TJ40elenm

The more it gets worked on the worse it gets.
At first cranked great, ran great at times other times would not idle...was not a constant problem, but a problem.
I had first mech clean both carbs..he finds top carb float in upside down..
when it came back ..slower cranking & idled way high..on first lake run the motor went to half power.
he went back in 3 times on carbs with same results on lake.
I went to new mech. he rebuilt both carbs...he did a lake test..soon as I take on the lake it goes to 1/2 power...
during this time it would crank right of idle great & run up to 2000 rpms then 1 cyl would go out & fuel would dump from top carb...to shorten the story a bit
Carbs have been into 14 times now
I began to track down it may be the power pack which is located on this motor under the flywheel...I had a new electrical kit put in ...there is still a problem with a miss & one cyl. going out.
As of now it cranks runs in idle great..soon as throttle is given it will spit sputter a bit then kick in...next it will run to right at 2000 rpms then go to missing again...kick in & run great to 4000 rpms any higher than 4000 & it goes to 1/2 power again......
My last mech does not do the lower end of outboards...but he has advised me of some leak down & he felt there was a problem in the piston area,
A seal may be leaking ...build up on the piston etc.....
Any ideas from you guys for me to look into in that area of the motor?
Im female but married to a man that has been a mech both automotive & diesel, but he has never dealt with 2-stroke outboards..I cant afford at this point to pay the high cost of sending this motor in & not finding the problem...Im very good at fixing things myself & more than determined to get this done..just point me to the info & I will tear it down myself ...

have you checked compression and spark? all wiring connections clean and tight? did the remove the jets and use rebuild kits when they did the carbs? has a link n sinc been performed, anyone check timing? how old is the gas in the tank? you wanted ideas, you got them.

Yes on much of this........
This is such a long drawn out story I dont know where to even start.
First outboard man....:
Cleaned carbs...3 times
first time was when the top carb float was found in upside down....
at first outboard would not idle or crank good..he set idle up & on test run on lake was when this motor went to half power......

I installed all new fuel hoses, filters, even a new tank bulb.... everything......also a complete new gas tank...


New outboard mech...
Rebuilt both carbs..new jets installed etc......when I got it back it would crank great idle great, but at 2000 rpm shut down a cyl. & dump fuel from top carb....
boat went back 3 times...even ran a full 2 hrs on lake test by this mech....
first run on lake back with me again went to half power...
I got on the phone with some OB folks that guided me to look at the powerpack...I took the boat back & had a complete new elec. package put in......
This man took a lake test with some fear that something is going on in the piston area such as a seal leaking or even build up on the piston...
since this man does not fool with the powerhead portion or complete overhaul thats where I am sitting now.......he did a compression test & explained to me a bit of problem with that cyl...if you need I can call & get the reading & more detail info on that test ....
*note prior to the installing the elec kit one plug was orange fire when I tested & even I know it should be blue & shocking the pook out of ya
after that was installed its got full spark again.....

whats got me sooo confused:::::
I took it out on the lake & heres what I get..
Cranks right up
Idles perfect
Engages with no trouble or strain...
at around 1500 rpms it coughs, spits, & misses
at 2000 it goes back to running perfect.
up to 4000rpms then is is on & off as to how well it runs...
Surging & even loosing power....
*note pumping make no diff.....

? If this is in the piston area would it not have the problem all the time?
So you think I should just did in tear it down & see whats there?
Im just so limited on great OB mech in my area.......but the last one has totally eliminated it being fire or fuel.....

I had a very similar problem, but with a much older engine. It ran great at home for the most part, but would bog down like it was running on one cylinder once I got it into the higher rpms. I dumped Seafoam into the cylinders and 3/4s a bottle into my gas tank, aparently there was something keeping fuel from getting to one of my cylinders intermittently and now it runs like it is brand new.

I did a round of Seafoam....
Runs like a top now...............
