Would This Pic Deter You?

OK, so we've got a boat that looks good on paper. Chaparral, 130 hours, second owner, selling due to too many toys, not enough time. We asked for pics, since it's a 3 hour drive. Everything looks good. Then hubby asked for pics of the prop/skeg/outdrive. And we get this.

Looks like a lot of sand wear to us. Would this deter you from buying this boat? It's priced appropriately for its age, amenities, hours, etc.Chap Outdrive.jpg

Why would you buy a boat without a test drive, or have a surveyor to check it out.???
Are you saying that you have purchased the boat?

I think they are just saying is that picture a bad sign enough so that they shouldn't waste the time or fuel to drive to view it.

I agree a test drive would be necessary. The prop wear could be caused by several reasons. Where has the boat been operated? Fresh water of salt? Too many questions and one picture will not answer.

Yes, this. Of course we'd have it inspected. But no need for a 6 hour RT and $3-$500 in inspection fees if this is would be a deterrent to experienced boat owners.

He lives in CA's central valley, quite a ways from any salt water. He claims it's a family boat, and they've used it at the nearby lake for family outings and fishing (there's a trolling motor bracket attached to the swim platform). He says it's never been in salt water, and the engine compartment pics seem to bear that out. (Note that he hadn't even washed the boat before he took snapshots).

He says fresh water only. And yes, we'd do a water test.

That kind of wear happens to any aluminum prop with or without sand. The drive looks fine. So long as the skeg hasn't been welded back on from an accident it wouldn't deter me at all. But as with any boat I wouldn't consider it without a certified marine surveyor going over it first and then a sea trial.

Mi, not sure how I was unclear. Six hours plus hanging round for an inspection is not something we're eager to do if the pics clearly show something amiss.

I work 50+ hours a week, plus another 10 in commuting time, and DH owns his own business. Time and money are commodities that we try to use carefully - and CA is a LARGE state. We could be criss-crossing the state for weeks before we find one that passes our criteria.

That part is like the bed of a pickup truck...if it gets used, the paint quickly disappears.

Looks like missing paint to me, that's really common and the reason they sell cans of touch up paint for out drives.

where I live, if the skeg has paint, the boat hasn't been used.

But I wouldn't drive 3 hours for an i/o bowrider.

Re: Would This Pic Deter You?

nope, that pic alone would not put me off.normal wear for maybe sand bottom .Sandi you remind me of a friend of mine who studied boat lit. till he was a paper expert on every boat produced that year.then he bought a used one, lol.theres no one perfect boat .well actually a garwood with a v-12 scripps is pretty well perfect but thats another animal all together.:joyous: hope you finally find your first boat and dont look back ,its your first in a line of memorys.

As Bondo pointed out, that is an OMC Cobra drive. Be sure you know what you're getting into before you buy a Cobra. While they are reliable and durable, there aren't a lot of mechanics willing and qualified to service them. If you're not prepared to service it yourself you should find a mechanic BEFORE you buy the boat.
