Re: Would This Pic Deter You?

As pointed out......What type of Motor and drive is in the boat?

That would be a deal breaker!

Hi,

according to your latest posts/threads, you've done your homework, which is fine, but just make sure you didn't get caught by the "paralysis by analysis" symptom. Here's an excellent "classic" post by CATransplant:

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topics-questions-not-engine-topics/first-time-boat-buyers-looking-perfect-boat-300510.html

Dude, I work with Economists. I know what analysis paralysis looks like, and it ain't me. :D I analyze during the week, and shop during the weekend.

Posting this pic has been helpful - the feedback on the drive is not something we'd caught.

It's a VP 5.0 Gi engine. We had assumed the drive was an SX.

We've heard not-great things about OMC, but our nearby mechanic does work with them.

OK, new question - is a Cobra/OMC outdrive a dealbreaker? This is a 2004 Chaparral.

Normally I wouldn't let that paint bother me, but how did that much paint come off in only 100 hours? Seems like it's been thru a lot of sand or other grit to me, and much of that sand & grit can go up the water intake, can mess up water pump housings and pile up in the nether regions of the engine block, manifolds & risers. Not that THAT'S necessarily a deal breaker either, just something to think about-

Yes...
OMC stopped building drives in the late 90's, and filed for bankruptcy in 2000. Bombardier (BRP) bought up OMC's assets, and continued on to make stellar outboard motors, but has little interest in supporting the legacy outdrives produced by OMC. Some parts are still available for OMC built drives, but it's spotty, and I wouldn't count on them always being available.

You clearly have a Volvo drive on that boat, so no worries...

Re: Would This Pic Deter You?

Maybe I'm just too fussy, but the location of the paint loss on the Outdrive looks odd to me....up high and on the sides. Looks like its been dragged thru the sand, not just run thru a little sand.

My Mercruiser outdrive has been thru 29 seasons now and the only paint loss is about an inch of the very bottom of the skeg. I regularly run thru a sandbar - at idle with the OD tilted up a bit. It has never been repainted and has about 1300 hours on her.

My prop is SS, so can't compare that, but the painted aluminum prop on my Kicker (with about 500 hours) has not one single spot of paint loss. Of course, she rides up higher and has never hit the bottom.

Could be as simple as a bad paint job from the factory, but I agree, the location on the wear doesn't suggest normal sand drag situations. Chaps are really nice boats and the low hours suggest's this boat is at or close to VGC. I would proceed ahead, but not w/o a inspection to insure the mechanics and all the rest are as they should be.

Leaky trim cylinder perhaps? Looks like oil on the driveway. Definitely not a deal breaker if it IS leaking, as the rebuild kits are cheap and are easy to do.

Don't know what Bond-o is smoking today, but he and DEBreskin are cookin it up themselves, I fear.

That's a VP SX drive with some paint worn off. NOTHING to be worried about.

YES! This is why I posted the pic in the first place - doesn't look like "light" sand wear. If he repeatedly "beached" it, it makes us less comfortable with it. With our jet skis, we have almost always used rock bags, and moored them in 5' of water.

Yep. Hubby talked to the owner on Monday night. He claims he's the second owner, it was bought locally from a dealer, and that dealer knows the boat well.

So DH is going to propose a pre-buy inspection and water trial at the local lake, and see what the owner says.

It's a 10 year old boat. I'd be more surprised if something WASN'T leaking. :)

Here's a 10 year old boat with nothing leaking--

the 405 hour engine room--

and outdrive, with some paint missing from the skeg...

===============

Like I said, normally I wouldn't mind some paint missing--- but our boat is proof if you shop around, you can find one that was treated like royalty by the original owner like ours was--- and I'm trying to keep up their good work! :)

Re: Would This Pic Deter You?

Im in the Central Valley. There arent many lakes around here and the ones we have are shallow and sandy. Heck I paint my prop every outing because it comes back sandblasted on every trip. OP I would suggest a survey or lake test but your concerns about the paint wear seem unfounded. I would thoroughly check the floor and that the trailer was well maintained.

I may be able to shed some more light. What lake was the boat used on a which dealer was it serviced at?
