Re: Wow, smokers will love this

In the eyes of QC the left has this conspiracy thing going on,limiting anything and everything that might smell of personal freedom. If it is a law limiting freedom it must be the left that has created it.
Come to think of it,Bush,Rove and Cheney must be real lefties, maybe even socialists. Why else would they have made the Patriot act??

Re: Wow, smokers will love this

I smelled someone the other day at the hockey game that was wearing the worst aftershave and lots of it. I wish I could pass a law that would have him removed because I was offended. Not only removed but fined.

Got stuck behind a bus the other day going threw chicago, it was spewing diesel fumes and filled my car with the stench. I was offended, where's my legal protection. Diesel fumes can kill you.

How about peanut butter. Lots of people allergic to it, should we institute no peanut zones? Peanut free work places? It isn't fair you know.

Private businesses can make decisions as to whether they want smoking or not. Oh wait, no they can't, they passed some laws. Neat. Put hey it's ok in casinos. If I knew someone had whizzed in a private pool I might go swimming elsewhere.

I thought the taxes collected from cigarettes were to be for health care and stop smoking programs. Or was that just another ruse? With all those people in Washington quitting, why would they be looking for new sources of revenue. That was the purpose of the tax I thought?

If you don't like the smell of smoke, who can blame you? It isn't pleasant and can be offensive. But just like Howard Stern another highly offensive thing, it isn't illegal. If social policy is what they are after why not make them illegal? I find it interesting how one could be offended by someone freezing their butts off outside to keep a building smoke free and pleasant, because of the 3 seconds it takes to walk past them.

How can anyone not call this infringment of rights anything but draconian. The same types are yelling for the legalization of marijuana.

I hate the smell of beer and whiskey, let's bar it from eating places also.

I should not have to eat in a place where the smell makes me sick.
What do you think they would say, "Go somewhere else and eat"
Work's both ways.

Alcohol does more damage to human life than second hand smoke will ever come close to.

Sorry, I will smoke my cigars, if you don't like it, don't come around me.

Re: Wow, smokers will love this

Any arguing or discussion beyond this point is pretty much rendered useless. Everyone who thinks smoking bans are absurd will say stuff along the lines of "what do we curb next...fatty foods? peanut butter??", and those who think smoking bans are okay will argue until their face is blue that its just as much their right to clean air as it is a smokers right to smoke. In essensce these arguments are dumb anyway as neither side gives an inch and more importantly neither side cares to look at the other sides opoint of view and accept that both sides have their points.

Fact of the matter is that smokers dont think there smoke affects others and if they do they dont care, non-smokers dont care about the smokers right to smoke (generalization).

I'll let you all get on with your arguing now. I refuse to make any more comments as my opinion is skewed in one direction, and I cant be truly objective.

Congress is allowed to smoke on the floor. Seems if it is so bad, why do they allow it there?

Non-smoking is banned outdoors and mandatory indoors at The Hideout. Anti smoking is banned both places.

I agree that if nobody has a right to offend others by excercising other rights we must: ban BO, bad perfume, dirty socks, spandex on overweight women, hair curlers in the supermarket, left wing agitators, Hillary Clinton, Bible thumping outside of churches, Sen. Murtha, media "newscasts", and so forth ad infinitum.

I am still trying to find the article about how the ACS padded their findings about 2nd hand smoke and some court rejected their finding as being unfounded.

There is an article about the ACS not spending all the big bucks for research as they were suppose to.

I agree that to try to argue this is pointless .As pointless is some people trying to put a left wing spin on a dumb axx law.
I wonder if the police in that town don’t have anything better to do than enforce this stupid ban?

CJY,drawing a correlation between smoking and firearms is a bit of a quantum leap don't you think?
Not at all. They both kill innocent people.

I have zero problem with either. My dad just died in October of lung cancer the day before his 65th B-day. I have a younger brother and sister that both smoke and are in their 30's. They all have/had the attitude that they could do what they want, when they want, around whomever they want. Well, one is dead, and the others are following in his footsteps. It's not the smoking that bothers me, it's the way smoking or second hand smoke affects the lives of those around them that bothers me. If you want to smoke, go ahead, smoke until the carbon monoxide has locked so tightly onto your blood cells that no oxygen can attach if that is what you want to do. Leave innocent people out of it though.

Health and the environment are the religions of the left.
This is bad QC? He77, let's knock down all the trees, dump sewage into our oceans and rivers, start our children smoking when they take their first breath, and pour used oil into sewers. If you don't like oily water, DON'T DRINK IT!!! If this is your line of thought, what right do we have telling another country what they can and cannot have. You don't want our local govs telling you what you can and cannot do, but you do want our country telling another country what they can and cannot do. A bit hypocrytical if you ask me. It sounds to me that if you are in favor, it's great. otherwise it's the darn left screwing things up for you and your ideals.

Health and the environment are the religions of the left.
IF this is the case, then death, oil, and money must be the religions of the right. At least at the current time. I know which side I would choose to be on.

I have said it before QC, I am not left. I am pro-life!

Very Well said. Sorry to hear of your father. Mine was diagnosed with a throat cancer in August. Never smoked a day in his life......but his brothers and sisters and his mom did. Best thing is that my uncle and some of our family friends quit the day they found out....... sometimes it takes the scare of losing someone you really care about before people realize the error of their ways.

Sorry could not stay out of it. Too close to home to not get emotionally attached to this.

One question, have any of these killed the innocent? Along the point I made earlier, you should not care if I start fires on my own property during a long dry summer day, even if it is next to yours. My rights are my rights...correct? I can dump used oil into yours and my local water sources as well. After all, if you don't like it, don't come around me, or don't drink it. All of these things used to be legal by the way. But some idiot went and took those freedoms away from us. Life would be so much better if we still had all the rights that have been removed by the law.

Re: Wow, smokers will love this

Wow. Quite a wide swing here.

rolmops,

I said nothing conspiratorial nor accusing anyone of a conspiracy. I said that health and the environment are the religions of the left. I believe that very strongly. The left is obsessed with the environment and health and I choose to be obsessed with human decency. You pick.

I actually drew a specific comparison (via a weak reference to another thread) as to the "blame" assessed to the right for having the nerve to infringe on our right to privacy to help insure my family's safety. Color me stupid.

I like smoking bans in restaurants as well, but all of these things are slippery slopes. I recognize the hypocrisy of favoring that ban and being against limits on the size of my car and its fuel economy, but I think that ABS should be mandatory. Whatever, we all choose our battles.

PONY,

There has already been proposed legislation regarding fat in food. There have been taxation ideas and fat% limits too. There are already bans on Whole Milk in some school districts. My comments are not paranoia, it is absolutely telling you how to live in one of the most basic examples: your selection of food . . .

CJY,

Worship is worship regardless of what you put on a pedestal. It is only wrong if your religion focuses your priorities on "really bad stuff done by really bad people". I don't see smoking bans as particularly "really bad stuff done by really bad people", but I do think focusing your efforts on that type of issue defines your priorities. I still believe that how we treat are fellow man is far more important than second-hand smoke ;)

So the smell of whisky endangers your life SBN? The smell of alchohol will wreck your liver?? Apples to Oranges.

Alchohol being more dangerous is a pretty broad statement. Maybe true, maybe not...Prolly cant prove it either way. Difference being second hand smoke kills more peole than drunk drivers.......and by a long shot not every drinker drinks and drives. Even that is Apples to Oranges.

For the record I too smoke cigars on occasion with my buddies when we are drinking or golfing or what have you.......but I NEVER do it when the people near me dont want me to smoke.

I know what we should do. Lets just regulate ourselves right out of existence, yeah thats the ticket. We all need more laws to protect us from ourselves. Take all our rights away. That way big bro can take care of us.

CJY,If you're going to mention the side effects of anything that has the potential of killing inocent people ,you just can't pick and choose what fits your agenda and not expect some flack.Second hand automobile exhaust in the face of an individual at an intersection that rides a bike is not far from the same thing. What are your thoughts on that?Do you mow your own yard?Have you considered how dangerous it is for a pedestrian walking by your yard while you are mowing?I mean ,what if a projectile was to be discharged from beneath the rotating blade and impaled into the leg of an "inocent "person who by the way doesn't use power equipment.Or worse into his or her face or neck.Does that concern you?I could go on and on ,but what's the point?

Re: Wow, smokers will love this

It's a terrible thing PONY. Thank you for your words of symapathy. I have never seen fear in my father's eyes as I did the day before his death. Most of us believe our fathers are superman, at least to a certain point in our lives. When I left that day, that was taken from me. I knew he was not superman. I will never forget it.

I will also never sit quietly by and listen to someone tell me they have a right to kill me or those around me whom I love. If you want to turn this into something that is leftist, I don't care QC, go ahead. None of us have to detail any of our motives if we choose not to. When you choose to read something into a post that is not there, sometimes you don't appear as intelligent as you would have liked.

Ditto. Are we particularly special? Are we the only ones capable of behaving like this without a law?

P.O.N.Y. the jury is still out on the second hand smoke deal, but like SS said, if it's so bad why is Congress allowed to smoke on the floor? Just think of all the people that is effecting.

It's no use. I do what I want and you do what you want. FH, you might want to sell all your bikes, they are gone next.
