what I have checked so far.
remove safety kill switch and jumped it, removed plugs and cleaned them, checked fuel, removed ignition (looked fine).

Thanks for you help!

Re: XR2 175 no spark!

Welcome,

The kill switch shorts the kill terminals on the switchbox's to ground, stopping ignition. It is open when the switch is in the up position with or without the lanyard. The ignition switch also shorts out those terminals to ground when in the off position.

To clear all this, and the wiring harness itself from suspicion, remove all the wires that are on the top right terminals of both switchboxes, and connect a jumper between them. Then put a test wire on one of them and leave it dangle. You will use this, shorted to the engine block, to kill the engine if it starts. Then start it.

If it starts, then check out the kill circuits. All the wires you took off should be open to ground. Follow the one that has either a short, or a resistance to ground.

1. A mercury tilt switch on the motor.
2. The ignition switch, and the wire that goes through a devious path to get to it.
3. The lanyard switch.
4. Any other kill circuits some egghead may have added on the boat.

If it doesn't start, the trouble isn't in the kill circuit. Double check by doing the ohmmeter testing on the wires anyway.

hope it helps
John

PS, The reason I told you to put it on the board instead of to me in a PM is that this is searchable, and can now be used for education by anybody in the world.

Re: XR2 175 no spark!

OK new twist to my problem, checked everything you said all seemed OK. so I removed the flywheel and one of the 6 magnets was totally destroyed and 2 other ones were no longer adhered to the flywheel, I think the 2 that were loose may have come loose from using the impact to remove the fly wheel, because the stator had rust on it and I think it would have been clean if those magnets were spinning around loose. so I put the flywheel beak on with 3 magnets still in to see if I would get any spark and I got none, now my question is are all 6 magnets needed to send spark to the coils? or should I have gotten some power through the yellow wire from the 3 remaining magnets?

Thanks for any more help you can give me.

When the magnets came loose, they had to hit the stator. The stator is laminated, so when you hit one of the sheets of steel, it usually cuts into a turn or two somewhere. Long story short, check the stator. Odds are it's toast.

And I doubt 3 magnets would energize the charge coils enough to fire.

Hope yer engine bearings are OK. Never use an impact wrench on a crankshaft. use a flywheel holder and a torque wrench.

hope it helps

Stator looks to be fine none of the coating even has a mark on it, trying to find a flywheel right now, most I've found are around 300 buck are there or is there a place you would recommend?
