Yam 115 2s 2001 - Trim gauge problem

The trim gauge only shows a maximum of "5 bars" (about 25% of range) so it doesn't matter how far I trim out, the gauge will still show this. When trimmed in sufficiently, the bars will drop accordingly.

Any suggestions as to the likely cause and fix?

Most likely the sending unit itself. It is adjustable.

I fully agree with Ray, I would start checking the sending unit, normally it is located in the engine bracket. It is normally a "variable resistor" or rheostat which produce a variable current or voltage depending on the position of a little lever.
The problem could "mechanical", like inproperly adjustment, some object or debris preventing the free movement of the lever, etc. It could be electrical, like the upper part of the resistor to be "shorted" so na change in the signal takes place.
Worse case scenario i can think about is your display is damaged and the LED's on the upper part of your scale are defective, each little "bar" you see is an independient LED or LCD cell. if one or a group of them are busted, you will see no change.
Hope for the best.
frank

Thanks guys. I am capable of doing some minor repairs but I don't have a manual on how to diagnose and fix this problem. Is there somewhere on the web which can give me some clues - like a schematic or pictures - or should I leave this to the usual mechanic?

Hi,
Check on amazon.com for example if you can find a Clymer or Seloc manual for Yamaha 2-stroke outboards that cover the year and model you have.
It could be mentioned there how to test/adjust this trim problem.

/Bo

Whiteman:
If you want to attepmt it yourself, either to fix it or to have your own diagnistic, You need at least a volt-ohmmeter, some electrical skills and a wiring diagram.

Remember: the problem might be at the sender, the wiring or the gauge.

PS: I have the Yamaha service manual for the 115TLRP TXRP, (older models), around the 90's.

Good luck
Frank

Thanks for the help guys (gals?). At this point it is over to the mechanic at the next service. I know my limits!
