Recenty purchased a 1999 150 Yamaha Saltwater II carb motor. Nice engine.

I have run the motor to a low oil alarm twice now, despite having oil in the lower tank. Naturlly I filled the top tank and went on my merry way. Oil consumption seems right. The motor runs beautifully. It would seem that: either the lower tank is not feeding the upper tank at a fast enough rate. or the lower tank is not feeding the upper tank at all.

What controls this oil transfer? Vacuum from the carb? What could cause this problem? Anyone have a similar experience?

I did run the lower tank down once. Is it possible that the feed line needs primed?

Thanks in advance.

GSD

Hi,

You are very lucky that you did not fry that engine. Do you want to fix that completely. Here is a 100% way to fix it. Unhook the whole oil injection mechanism. That way you will no longer be wondering if that oil injection is working or not. ---------All you do is mix it in the gas. Then one day if you decide to sell the engine. Just rehook it. ----just my 2cents

First of all are you aware that there is a small oil reserve under the hood of your engine. This bottle fills and it is here where your oil mixture is retrieved. It does not come from the 2 gallon bottle. There is a switch on the side of this bottle if you flip it it will fill the bottle. However usually when you turn the key on your console it begins to fill. Keep in mind it is float sensative so if it is low when you take off, your alarm will sound and continue until the bottle fills itself.

Now as far disconnecting the oil injection...I cannot think of any more insane advice. It is a known fact that at idle speed all outboard need a very miniscule amount of oil and certainly not the amount you get when you "HAND MIX IT".

So if you are running premix you are dumping tons of excess oil in engine when it is not needed. I dont think anyone needs an explanation as to what that does beyond fouling plugs.

Did you alarm go off when you took off from a dead stop? And did it stop after a few seconds?
Once the alarm goes off shut it down and turn key to on position and you can hear the pump filling the bottle..

Steve

Re: Yamaha 150 Saltwater II. help please...

Thanks for the feedback... Yes, I was speaking of the oil flow between the two reservoirs. I was not getting oil up to the upper reservoir where the idiot alarm switch is.

Attached post from another site...

Found the manual pump override switch. Heard pump running, but no oil to the upper reservoir. Removed lower tank and located inline filter. Removed, cleaned out w/ solvent. Filter was plugged with sludge. I assume this is what happens to old 2 cycle oil that does not get run enough.

Tank filled right up. Will observe next run on the water.

A new filter is on the list...

Thanks for the help.

jocko
