I have a couple of questions about my motor, yamaha 60 hp four stroke, 2002 model.

The speedometer is no longer functioning. It happened on a day when there was a lot of debris on the water so I assume it is clogged. From reading other posts I gather that there is a small hole on the front of the lower unit that you need to clear with a drill bit. However, the others described a circular hole I think, and the one I am looking at looks more like a horizontal slot about 1/2" long. Is this the hole I need to clear or am I looking in the wrong spot?

Also, this is my first boat so I am trying learn. What rpm is it safe to run at? The boat (17 ft carolina skiff) came with a 14 pitch prop, which did fine for two people, but with three it was a crapshoot of whether or not you could get on plane. I changed that out to a 12 pitch, which helps the hole shot, but now if you lay the throttle over it will go past 6000 rpm which I know is not good for it.

One last question, when on plane and trimming down, sometimes it makes a sqeaking noise. Is that from the hyrdaulics struggling against the pressure put on the motor, or does that pivot need to be greased?

Thanks a bunch y'all!!

Re: yamaha four stroke 60 hp questions

I have about the same question for the rpms. I have a 2004 f60 and after the 10 checkup its running at 5000 rpm's. I think its slow. If you go to g3boats.com under performance testing their
f60 is doing 5800 rpms. Which I figure is correct since they are owned by Yamaha.

Re: yamaha four stroke 60 hp questions

the F60 max operating RPM is 6K. I try to prop for at least 58K.
it will turn it all day long as long as the fuel and cooling system are kept topnotch.
on the leading edge of the gearcase amost in line with the prop shaft center you will see a tiny 1/8 or so hole, thats the speedo pickup and yes debris clogs them.
most the time that squeak is lack of lubricant on the trim pins and wear pads.
we actually have more problems with folks not running them hard enough rather than to hard.

Thank you very much for the reply rodbolt. I went out and found the hole and I believe I cleared all of the debris. I won't know until I go to the lake next time. I will also lube all of that stuff as well. As far as the rpm's, are you saying that I should switch props, or that I should run the prop that I have now at 5800?
Thanks again!

Re: yamaha four stroke 60 hp questions

if it will turn 5800 with the load you have and not trimmed so high its cavitating then run that prop.
I like to see cruise RPM's between 4 and 5 anyway.
by the ability to turn up it means the engine is not overloaded, not that you have to run 5800 all day. it will do it but past 4500 it will start eating fuel.

Hi all: I'm buying a 2002 Yamaha 60 on Monday. It's a bit late in the day, but my question is: Have all of you found the engine reliable?

Hi,
Yamaha F60 4-stroke is very reliable (as most of the Yamaha 4-strokes).
In 2004 it got EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection), before that it had carburators.

It is fuel efficent, quiet (even at higher RPM) and if maintained it should last for many years.
All tests I have read about 50-60-70 hp range it scored high or highest in most parts of the test (speed, fuel efficency, loudness etc).

I use a Yamaha F115 4-stroke myself (2003). Works fine.
