Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

If it's my old #%#%$#^ chrysler...

Check/squeeze the bulb

Check plugs/plug wires

Take off cover and use my homemade pull rope

Pull and cuss until engine starts

Repeat until wife has had enough and says let's go get a new bass boat.

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

Back "when I was a boy" we used to insert a crank handle in the front of the engine to spin the engine over by hand until it started. Unless, you had a old 2 putt John Deer tractor. On them you opened the spit cocks first then you grabbed the flywheel and spun the engine over to get it to start
Yea and you better have that spark advance set right too.:eek:
Don't ask.:p

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

Look at the hot lady that you took with you and with your smoothest line ask her what she wants to do. If that does not work drop a long line and jig for halibut.

1-depending on the water conditions radio the coast guard
2-Check lanyard plug/switch
3-check fuel and fuel related components Carb/filters/vents
4-Check for spark/spark plugs and ignition related parts
5-check for compression by putting your hand over the spark plug hole "not acurate but tells you if pistons are moving and a good hard blow tells you probably have decent compression"

If you have all of those you engine should run if not drop your kicker and enjoy a slow ride home.

Note to all DO NOT use starting fluid on any engine that has a preheat system or spark plugs. You can blow you engine apart. Having to use starting fluid in any engine "other than ones designed for it" usually means your engine has poor compression.

Yes, or else it's a good way to break your hand/arm. And, make sure you don't grab the handle of the crank with your thumb in the wrong position. If you do and it kicks back it will break your thumb.

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

awww this is an easy one..... been there done that....lots....

first of all... some points...

the term crank an engine came from the pre electric starter days.
insert a hand crank and go for it. if it started or not you still had to crank it.

the first thing you do is grab a beer and think.....then make a pass at the wife. if she turns you down.....

2. duct tape the wives mouth !

3. do everything dj said in post number 2.

3.a ...if you find the problem...and cant fix it....

your options are......
...swim...btdt
....flag for a tow....btdt
....try to paddle yer 20 footer...btdt
....grab yer cell phone and call a buddie, to tow or bring parts...btdt
....have another beer, and curse about not having a trolling motor. btdt
....sleep on the boat till morn....(remove duct tape from wives mouth and place it over your ears, and protect your private parts) btdt

4. if it does start......
....remove duct tape from wives mouth and brag about how great a mechanic you are. btdt :D

go home and start looking for a mew motor.

see? simple!

oops

Yep, here we were having a great time pulling our crab pots, tide is just starting to come in, we're in the Islands so tide movement is important and sometimes stressful. Boat won't start, turn key and nothing, get someone on kicker to keep us off rocks, 21' boat with 8 passengers so it's tight 4 are young children. I getting nervous, pulling fuses, checking everything, 30 minutes gone by with no luck. Stop, grab beer and look at everyone with dumbfounded eyes. Low and behold there's a child swinging around something red. #*!@ loving child pulled out that pretty little red line with cool clip so as to play with it. Count to ten and a few more beers and I'm allowed to talk again.

Ya know LT, a few years ago that actually happened, and he got it running and got home.

Windy, it did crank (ok turn over for you guys that can't figure it out) so it had to be in neutral.

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

You know I replaced my points with a pertronix ignition system. After reading this post I think I'll carry the points and the plate there attached to along for a spare. The problem is by the time I carry all the spare parts I need that may brake someday then the boat is so heavy it will no longer float.

I take it that this really happened ?:D
Nope, but it does seem very vivid now doesn't it? By posting that, I have probably jinxed myself into having that happen.

Actually, I keep the motors in tip top shape, so nothing does go wrong, and even if it does, I have the skills, and tools on board to get me home.

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

well... this answer may not be the best but it's certainly not wrong.
If there is a crank but no start... and it doesn't look like it's going to start, i'd save my battery voltage for the radio and signal a boat and ask him ever so politely if he would stand by for 5 or 10 minutes... and if he does not hear from me in 5 to 10 minutes to assume that my battery is dead, and call the CG coz I need a rescue......

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

step 2 would be... this is assuming i have not 1 tool on board, but plenty of beer and beer cups....
I'd drinky my frosty beverage and lick my cup clean. I'd unscrew my fuel/water seperator and dump it in the cup. I'd pray my cup isn't going to melt in 30 seconds. if there's alot of water in my cup i'm screwed. if it looks like good fuel i'd remove the spark arrestor and dump a little down the carb or throttle plate... (dunno how i would do it on an OB) but if i have frosty goodness on board then there is a possiblity i have a beer bong (a funnel with some line) so i could probably get fuel down the throats of an OB that way.
If she perks up then dies right away... then my chances are it's a fuel delivery problem... but hey, i'm at sea... and for now my radio works because i haven't killed my battery yet. I'm probably better off not asking a dude to stand by for me... i'm better off just calling it in myself.

Lets hope you didn't jinx yourself :D.

As for me at worst all I would half to do is drop the trolling motor and troll on to shore :). Same thing somebody I know did a while back when his starter went out on his boat, that was a journey from where we left him :D, but he made it back to camp. Of course we didn't know he was stranded.

drift a 20 or 30 feet from the ramp, anchor and enjoy the ramp action! Better than fishing most of the time!

Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

So Don what would you do????

Fix it BEFORE I go out. Very seldom does a boat just quit without giving some kind of warning. Hard starting when hot or cold, missing at idle, low rpm, you name it. When it first starts doing something out of the ordinary, find out why. They always get you home after that. Plus the fact that when (not if) it doesn't start, I have the knowhow to fix it.
I used to go to some seriously remote spots. No VHF, no CB, no cell phones, and usually no other boaters. Just me, the wife and kitties, and the boat.

Oh, and before you ask, yes things broke at bad times, but I was always able to make it work enough to get home.
