Last fall I put my boat up for the winter like I normally do by gettting it serviced and then loading it up with moth balls, irish spring and dryer sheets. These seemed to keep the mice out pretty good but not the squirrels.

The squirrels had pretty much taken over my boat and left it a mess.

All summer long things have been fine but this past weekend I had the boat out and saw that my friends were starting to create their winter store again.

Anybody have any secrets or good experiences using electronic squirrel deterents to keep these varmits out of your boat.

Now that they have found mine I think they have spread the word about it and I am going to have an even bigger problem this year.

yeah that's not a joke at all... urine will work, i dont know how you want to apply it to your boat and still keep it sanitary, but it will work

A house cat, if you're storing it at home. Tried for years to get them outta the attic. Put the cat up there once or twice a year now - no more problems!

The very best deterrent for them though is beside the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Are you suggesting leaving a house cat in the boat? I just heard about the dryer sheets, but irish spring? Is that so they can bath?

And urine, how long will that take to get the smell out of the boat in the spring? I will have to follow this thread............

Perhaps put the urine under the boat outside.

put some of the urine in a jar that has a lid, put some holes in the lid, toss a rag or something in it to slow down evap. with cover on you shouldn't have to spread it around.

Find a plastic model of a large bird of prey. An owl, falcon, eagle etc.

Place it on or near the boat. Should be enough to keep the critters away.

Yeah, like the lifelike plastic owl that my squirrels are using as a jumping point to my bird feeders;)

I like the sauteed with onions and mashed potatoes route. Live trap or 22 squibs.

I find it necessary to thin the herd periodically with a pellet gun.
I've had them in the attic in the past. They also chew on the artisian well, shed, house, dig up anything freshly planted, etc.

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

I used to have a squirrel problem. I used peanut butter mixed with various poisons and it worked well, but they seemed to breed faster than I could kill them. I adopted a 35 lb house cat that just showed up one day with a dead squirrel in its mouth. I haven't had a live squirrel, mole, bird or other since.
The urine will work, but I'd suggest maybe using it in the yard as a perimeter defense not in the boat, some of that stuff is worse smelling than a skunk.

Does this mean you have lots of holes in the attic now? I hope your not shooting at them when they are IN the boat! that could results in a 'holy boat'

PS how do you get those emodicons in the body of your postings? ;o)

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

I would suggest rat traps to eliminate the problem and the urine can be placed on heavy felt strips and hung under the cover. I would also suggest an owl decoy, but you will have to move it every few days or they will figure out its fake. I have used cat poop in place of urine. Squib 22 rounds have a very short range and should not penetrate a roof, tho would not use it in boat. If you can store the boat at least 8' from nearest tree so as not to make it easy for them to jump in or on. Also a product called Bitter X can be applied to the wiring and cushions. It is available in spray or paste. It will deter anything from chewing normally. I have two wiener dogs who hate squirrels and keep them far from my garden and boat.
