Re: Squirrel Deterrent

Anyone have luck with shrink wrapping the boat in the winter to keep the critters out? I'm considering it this year for that exact reason but was wondering if others had a positive experience. Apparently it would work.

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

I have a yard full of squirrels and so far have not had a squirrel problem, my boat sets in the back yard covered, closest tree is probably 20 feet away, I do have a yard full of live oaks so they have plenty of food and I guess places to nest, two dogs will let them come on the porch and eat dog food. The problem I have is spiders, drier sheets help with them.

Yea but I bet that you have more than your share of nasty spiders:eek: though and I would rather deal with the squirrels than those llittle buggers.

If you have a cat or a friend with a cat, take some of the litter from its box and sprinkle it around. As many have said, the urine will keep 'em away.

I've seen folks hang old CDs from string to keep critters out of fruit and nut trees. That might be worth a try.

PS how do you get those emodicons in the body of your postings? ;o)

Just to the right of where you type a reply you'll see "Smilies". Click on one and look at the code it inserts. There are some differences depending on what PHP server we're using, so play around with it and you'll get it. ;)

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

here, my problem isn't mice or squirrels...

Its the &^^$(*@%ed chipmunks...

Ol' Chip n Dale had nested in the insulation of my truck hood.

I don't drive this every day. So... I opened the hood and nuts fell out of the openings...

In the RV, dryer sheets and cinnamon sticks work for the mice. No problems with the boats... Just the truck...

Don't know about squirrels or Chips...

Possible try cinnamon sticks. Picked up two packs from the Dollar Store... Gonna try this with the boats too...

Luck be with us...

Never tried but have also heard of using human hair from barber shop to keep critters away.

Moth balls have worked for me for three years. Also open a fresh bag of charcoal and lay it out for moisture control.

Not really a big issue guys, and it appears to be a topic with a lot of interest. The problem with reviving old threads is generally with technical topics where someone tags on and then multiple responders are replying to different people. In this case, a couple of today's posts are directed at the OP which is kinda . . . uh, well . . . useless. Carry on . . . :)

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

I had squirrels in the attic, some body told me about squirrel and raccoon repellent from the hardware store. It worked! Oil will work also, kind of what that stuff was. Animals don't like oil to get on them. Maybe wipe down areas with thin coat and clean off in the spring.

They can't get in your boat if they are already in your belly. :)

Slow cooker Squirrel...yummy.

Like it dipped in flour and fried in some butter too....

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

Someone mentioned chipmunks. An excellent way to thin the herd is to half fill a 5 gallon bucket with water, then sprinkle sunflower seeds on top to make it appear solid to our furry friends. Then place the bucket near a common gathering place (next to a wood pile is excellent) or construct some sort of ramp for them. They will then set about committing suicide lemming style. I can tell you from experience they sink so be sure to check the bucket daily. If you don't, they eventually float...but by then they sure do stink.

BTW, one nice thing about squirrels in comparison to mice, they seem to be less inclined to chew on wires (in my limited experience with them taking up unwanted residence.) In cleaning out my boat post purchase a year ago, I found a few dozen chewed up walnut shells and a mess of nesting materials that had to be from squirrels. While they enjoyed chewing up some foam and carpet they didn't mess with any wiring thank goodness. The buggers were nesting/living under the deck  The boat now resides in my garage. I put out mothballs, mouse traps and have a cat to boot so there shouldn't be any trouble this winter. I made it through last year just fine.

For the folks parking their boats outside, I would try borrowing a litter box. On a different but related topic, mothballs seem to have chased away a skunk that spent a few nights under my deck last week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. (especially since my dog is dumb enough to go after it given an opportunity. She loves to catch woodchucks and squirrels.)

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

One option I haven't read in these posts is a Hav-A-Heart...trap...wire cage with a trap door, catches em alive and you can relocate em if wish. Preferably on the OTHER side of a river... you gotta put some distance on em or they will find their way home. Had a neighbor [somewhat twisted]. would spray paint em orange thru the trap and release em, so he found out some distance is required cuz some would show back up. Some people [not me ] euthanize em by submerging the trap w squirrel in water to drown em. Or with car exhaust [not me].
If you cant repel em........ relocate em maybe........

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

Had a neighbor that trapped squirrels in the have a heart trap...

Looked out the back door, noticed one in his trap. I called "Terry". He said Oh good... Next I see.... Him walking out to the trap with a pellet gun. Shot the squirrel and dumped it back in the woods... What a waste...

Now, pressure cooked with some garlic gravy and dumplins... Thats how *I* get rid of squirrlies... :)

Re: Squirrel Deterrent

guys I can appreciate the issue of digging up a 2 yr old thread but some of the comments in this thread should be sticky'd, sauteed with onions and mashed potatoes ROFLMAO or one guy says get a fake owl and the very next post is about how squirrels use the owl to jump to the bird feeder! Priceless!!
