The drive is an easy thing to remove. I used to remove and install my Alpha by myself. It is easy. Plus you should be doing it to check alignment and grease the u-joint if they have zerks.

Still that would be a last resort if lower w/pump impeller isn't the problem. They do have zerks and I do have to admit it's been long time since greasing but hasn't been in the water that much since the were serviced.

Not the last resort. I could get mine on and back off in 10 minutes.

Removed the lower this morning and found nothing wrong with the impeller. Hooked a garden hose up to the copper tube in the outdrive, removed cooling hose on "left" side of the thermo housing. Water came out the top of the thermo housing. Hooked hose to "left" hose, where it was already disconnected, and water did not flow. (blocked) Hard to see but I believe that hose goes to the bottom of the "left" exhaust manifold. Would that mean the water jacket in the exhaust manifold is blocked, as the two risers are new? Or maybe the elbow underneath the manifold? If that were the case wouldn't it flow also thru the "right" heat riser and on out thru the exhaust? The two looped hoses are from when it had a closed cooling system heat exchanger. (long gone)

It looks like you went from log to center rise and jacked up the plumbing to fit. You need this

. If the hose your talking about goes to the bottom of the manifold and you applied water to that hose ,it should free flow out the exaust.. If not the manifold is plugged up solid or the wrong gasket (block off)was used on the riser to manifold.

Yea, something is up with that thermostat housing and your configuration. There could be other problems but that doesn't look right.

It has alway run very cool. This hose routing is the way I bought the boat in '2008. It's been sitting for a long time and I suspect rust collecting.

The top gasket is what I removed and I installed the bottom gasket per recommendation for fresh water cooling.

The two left hoses, not the water pump hose, are both plugged and pass no water!

try blowing air or hook up a hose and try to pass water thru them.

time to replace both manifolds then. and maybe get the correct therm housing

Seems like I have an "extra" hose that I don't see on parts exploded views. There are two smaller hoses, one on top of thermo housing and one below on thermo housing that disappear down into the bowels of the left side. One hose goes into an elbow into the exhaust manifold. What does the other connect to? I hope I never have to replace the starter cause that is one tight, obscure and hidden area down there!

I'd be willing to do that but am so afraid of twisting off a bolt into the head. If that happens I'd probably have to pull the head to work on getting the broken bolt out.

Ayuh,.... So ya rip the circulatin' water pump off, 'n tear it apart for no reason what so ever,...

But yer scared to do what needs to be done to fix the motor,..??..??,.....

The T-stat housin' it the Wrong t-stat housin',.... probably oughta start there,....

You either need the t-stat housin' that matches the exhaust manifolds, or go back to the log manifolds,....

Ya can't push water in, an out port,....

Yup, your right! Had nothing to fear but fear itself! Pull off the exhaust manifold and everything was plugged up solid. Gonna need at least one exhaust manifold. Gonna wait for the other to fail before spending the extra money for two. Maybe another bad decision but "dumb is as dumb does!" (Who said that? LoL) I post a couple of pics in a few minutes.

My money is with Bondo that the thermostat housing isn't right for the application. Manifolds obviously plugged, but prob not the only issue . Marineengine dot com has parts breakdowns by engine serial number will show correct thermostat housing part number

Well after removing all the plugs and poking, scraping, high pressure water and using some spring wire on a drill, I was able to open all the various passages to were all are flowing water very nicely! I teflon taped all the plugs, painted and waiting to order some new gaskets will put it back in. While I've got it opened up I'm going to change the spark plugs. Monday I'll do the other side even though it seems to be flowing alright.
