Has to be in foward gear so the little gear selector arm thingy is pointed straight ahead. Make sure the prop doesn't freewheel both directions, if it locks one way you are good to go.

Take your prop off and re install it after the drive is back on. Less chance of screwing the prop up if you drop it unexpectedly.

You can't damage it if it's not on

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,....... Ya, put the controller in forward gear, don't matter how far, so long as in forward gear,......

When ya put it back on, no doubt the drive will slip into neutral, as it does if you touch the prop shaft, unless you hold tension on the propshaft to lock it in forward gear,.....

I use a bungee strap, from 1 side of the cav-plate, 'round the prop shaft, back up to the other side of the cav-plate,.....
You manually shift the drive into forward gear, 'n turn the prop shaft back a click, or 2,.....
That holds the dog-clutch, In Gear,.....

I do the opposite. I use a bungee on the prop blades to hold pressure on the gear, holding it in. Even if I just hand tighten the prop nut to put it on. How are you gonna damage a prop when the skeg sticks out below it?

Was thinking the same thing... It takes a lot of work to screw up a prop while removing an outdrive. And as a couple of the posts above alluded to, the prop makes a nice handle to put tension on the geartrain, to hold it in gear when re-installing.

How do you make sure the prop doesn't free wheel? I have had my out drive off and it did...out it back and there didn't seem to be an issue, but removed it again...not sure what procedure I am suppose to follow here,

Thanks Chris....I have read that you should check that the shift shaft is in the right position after the install...how do you do that? I assumed that if it all goes back in correctly you should be good..?

Thanks again...

Chris,

I ask because on another forum people suggested to engage the prop, and hold it with bungee cord to make sure it stays straight. I had the drive put back on and everything slide into place with no issue, before ultimatey having to take it off for a another issue, but I never touch the prop...just lined up the shift shaft. they warn of it being in the wrong gear after assembly..

Thanks!.

If it's in the right position before install it should be good after. Before install shifter at helm in forward, move shift lever on drive clockwise to point forward as you move prop counterclockwise and it should lock. This is where the bungee cord Bondo mentioned comes in to keep it locked. Make sure all the o-rings are in and gasket in place. Have at it, Chris video is really good at this part including the Mer kick. When you in and bolted up helm back to neutral. Trim up and connect speedo hose and you can verify the 2shift shafts are good but they should be.

I usually install the drives by myself on my boat. If you manage to drop it , chances are good when you're doing it alone, you could bend a blade. I just keep pressure on the shaft with my hand to stop the shift shaft from moving when I'm close to the end where it slides into the foot.

I actually have to install both of mine today..I'll be doing it with the props off

If you drop the drive, the last of your problems is going to be a bent prop!

Watch my videos to see how it's done properly, with zero chance of dropping it, and absolutely minimal risk of back injury.

I do have one question about doing it with the prop off. How do you turn the drive shaft to align to coupler splines if they are 'out' (which about 75% of the time they will be) without the prop on? :noidea:

Chris.........

Saw your video. When you're doing this you're able to rest the drive on the ground when you are putting in the shaft. Also, you only have to lift a inch or two in order to slide it the rest of the way. And... you're able to pick it up at an easier angle(standing above it)

I'm working on a 27 ft boat with a swim deck above the drives, on stands in my gravel driveway. In order to get the drive in I have to stack wood and cement blocks in order to get it to the correct height. THEN..I'm able to manipulate it like you do to install it.

Sorry to be argumentative but yes, there's a serious risk in damaging your prop if you have an installation like mine.

I highly doubt any other damage would occur if the drive itself was dropped... haven't dropped one yet and don't plan on doing so in the future. However,if I do, there won't be a prop on it to get damaged
