    1974 evinrude 6hp coughing

I had something VERY similar happening on my 1960 Fastwin which I posted about here: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/1960-evinrude-fastwin-stutter.759064/. I'd recommend giving the carburetor a thorough cleaning and then giving it another go.

    Quit on the Water!

Have seen this before. Starts up cold but hard start or no start when engine is warm. Replace your condensers.

Yup. Was definitely disappointed with myself after the realization.

    1960 Evinrude Fastwin Stutter

Update: I disassembled the carburetor again and put it back into the ultrasonic cleaner. When I disassembled this is what I found in the bowl: I didn't replace the fuel lines originally nor did I take apart the fuel filter on the port side of the motor and clean it. I replaced all the fuel...

    1960 Evinrude Fastwin Stutter

This is the link that I didn't have connected to the cam follower. 🤦‍♂️ This is a quick video I took of my current synchronization:

    1960 Evinrude Fastwin Stutter

Thanks F_R. I don't feel like the coils are dragging/rubbing. I did pop the cowl and I missed reconnecting the linkage between the cam follower and the throttle plate when I reassembled it. Even still, when in neutral and on the throttle stop the throttle plate is barely open. I have the carb...

Also, can anyone confirm how to tighten up the throttle on these motors? Its a little loose and tends to throttle down from the throttle stop when starting.

Thanks I'll double check those when I pull the carb (hopefully today).

    1960 Evinrude Fastwin Stutter

I played around with it quite extensively. Started 1.5 turns out from lightly seated. Was worse when turning in. Turning out didn't seem to make much difference

    1960 Evinrude Fastwin Stutter

I did a decent amount of work to this motor two winters ago (Feb 2021; New coils, wires, points cleaned and timed, plugs, carb kit, gearcase reseal) Just got the opportunity today to get it on the back of a boat for a test and never left the dock. It was stuttering pretty good. Based on the fact...

    1960 Fastwin Gearcase Reseal

It's definitely small. Not even visible with the naked eye. I'm sure I could do something like that. Take Dremel to it in that area, grind it out fill with JB and try and smooth it out from there I suppose.

    1960 Fastwin Gearcase Reseal

Hey all, I did this work a WHILE ago just been busy with life for a few months. Anyways I resealed the gearcase and then pressure tested to check my work. I didn't get the prop shaft sealed correctly, so removed it and put the extra prop shaft seal that was in the kit in place with some...

    1960 Fastwin Gearcase Reseal

I found my answer. "Please note the 18-2032 is about 3/16 inch thick, it is thinner than the earlier version of seal but is still intended to replace earlier versions as shown in the cross reference search."

    1960 Fastwin Gearcase Reseal

Well I have been able to remove all of the seals now, the driveshaft seal was a PITA. Question, now that I am prepping for installation of the seals, I have the Sierra kit 18-2684. It came with 4 seals (2 pairs of different sizes). It appears 2 driveshaft seals and 2 prop shaft seals. 2 of the...

    1960 Fastwin Gearcase Reseal

I tested it under pressure while under water and the shift rod seal was the culprit. Hoping to get to doing the reseal the work soon.

    9.9/15 Front-to-back Armature Plate Movement

Thanks guys. I punched the boss as recommended by kbait and it took out the play with the armature plate. I do have a misfire when I throttle down from the neutral stop, which causes it to want to stall. Wire from the driver coil to the top coil was spliced with a butt connector, I'm going to...

OK pretty certain I understand now. Punching the vertical surface that the red arrow is pointing to.

    9.9/15 Front-to-back Armature Plate Movement

You are talking about what I have shown with a red arrow. Correct? When I removed the armature plate I noticed the the brown Delrin bearing moves back and for on this I'm assuming this is where the play is coming from.

    9.9/15 Front-to-back Armature Plate Movement

This is my concern (changing timing). When you are referring to boss are you referring to part 29 in the breakdown attached to my first post?
