    Most likely Merc only makes the oval, but just guessing right now. The shutters don't need to block 100% of the water flowing backwards, just needs to slow most of it so it doesn't make it back up to far

    Don't think it's a direct short to ground, just something slowly starts drawing more current until fuse blows. This could be many things With the Tach showing weird signs I would disconnect the 12V lead to gauge and put a amp meter inline between wire and gauge.

    If your motors are raw water cooled (no heat exchanger) it would have 160* Stats. Those with heat exchangers would use a 180* The boat gauge is not 100% accurate
