Do I replace the core plugs when engine is out?

this is a good point our dock is in a big shallow sandy cove so I get a bunch of silt in the engine, no way around it. I get a silt storm backing out of the lift such that it digs a 12-18" deep channel every year backing out...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

pretty sure the bellows kits and gimbal bearings are the same for all Gen 2 drives. The reason for the listing breakdown at 98 and up /97 and older is they changed the input shaft bearing arrangement and ujoints. Went from and internal to external retaining ring on ujoints and the bearing pack...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

would not be surprised if the OEM part is a AC Delco made but would also think it that it would not be boxed that way... You do see on here folks having good results with AC Delco modules, also do see a fair amount of issues with weird stuff goin on with EST modules not going into base mode...

Shift cable resistance, best lube point to possibly help?

fresh water hoist kept lake boat... I figured if the next set lasts 15 years I'll probably be into another boat by then... only the exhaust bellows was torn shift and driveshaft were still water tight. yes you need small hands. mine was on the trailer so I was on my knees or upside down in...

Shift cable resistance, best lube point to possibly help?

Ok missed the fact that it is on land would take a look and see if it is in the cable (most likely) or elsewhere. the good thing about doing he bellows and shift cables , if you use OEM parts will last a long time. I just did mine a couple springs ago the originals were 18 yrs old.

    Exhaust Manifold Question

yes I would be concerned the carbon steel does last as long as cast iron . I think some of the OEM merc are coated on the inside. While cheaper initially the steel fabricated ones may need replacing more often. If they weld it why not make it out of stainless steel?

Shift cable resistance, best lube point to possibly help?

the places that lube might help are in the shift mechanism in bellhousing , drive has to be removed to get at. there is no factory lubing procedure for the shift cable. Have you verified it is the lower shift cable not from helm to shift plate? if you take the lower cable off the shift plate on...

    mercruiser 4.3 overhauling

Te later one replaces the earlier part number so it is the same. If you look up mercruiser lifter part numbers they are the same i think, one supersedes the other. Given you got it as a pile of parts , Not sure how you tell if they are ok. Even in the US from summit racing they are about $300 a...

    What happened now?

If you end up pulling the drive pull it in one piece . You want to narrow down if the engine is locked up or drive, gimbal bearing etc. start with the plugs and see what’s in there . Time is of the essence if there is water in the engine , if so need to get it out bet it running to drive off...

    What happened now?

Agreed either drive is locked up or water in cylinder , pull plugs see if it is hydro locked. If not hydrolocked pull drive see if it turns. you Pulled the oil did you refill? why would you replace the coil because it backfired?

    mercruiser 4.3 overhauling

No those are rollers. In general pretty much have seen that rollers can be reused with different cam etc. my other hobby is a 65 GTO, guys reuse roller lifters with different cams all the time, it’s seen as an advantage going with a roller , which on a pontiac V8 is pricey. Buy a good set of...

As SD nmentioned same roller. You can use rollers on any lobe used or new. The comment in the manual is for hydraulic flat tapped cams where the lifter wears in to a specific cam lobe

    Prop Selection - Bayliner 175

yes usually as you go down in pitch diameter tends to go up. None of these aluminum props are going to have so much bite that they will not turn, worry about that when you go with the higher end SS props. check out mercs prop selector will make some general recommendations

    Prop Selection - Bayliner 175

that is a good step wise approach. For sure a 3.0 will not be barn burner. I ran mine pretty hard for 20 years (was 5 yrs old when we got it) and it was still running great when I sold the boat. Was a great starter boat an I cut my teeth on boat maintenance on it, never broke the bank
