    Leak into bilge, bellows?

those orings hold the inner race of the gimbal on the driveshaft so they spin together the single one keeps grease in the coupler for those couplers that have a zerk for the splines

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

a couple of things that have hung me up when almost all the way in - the orings on the driveshaft- are these greased up, and when I have been doing alignment work one can build up a lot of grease in the coupler and take some effort to squeeze out. Did you check the alignment i ok? While it...

    Upper gearcase pinion bearing replacement

If you change the bearings and races you will need to set up rolling torque and reshim the gears. Slide hammer on jaw puller will get the races out. A little heat on the housing helps

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

yes normal to have to center the bearing by whacking the adjustment tool in 4 directions (i think this is in the manual), and adjust the alignment after doing a gimbal bearing.

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Mike has you straight on the shift cable The bilge pumps what u outline is good would also consider battery capacity most of the time when it sinks the bilge pump comes on enough to drain battery so would consider adding a second battery and charging either solar or shot

    lower unit replacement

Agree with above most sure fire way is a bolt on SEI. Would check transom for signs of flex cracking as the weight ended up on the drive. Given the age would keep and eye out for transom and stringer rot anyways

Remove drive shaft lower bearing cup

I used a slide hammer as well but had to grind down the jaw as mentioned to get under the cup. Yes you may have to do it a couple times to get the right shim. Definitely get the factory manual and you will need the factory tooling to set up the gear height. you will also need an inch lb torque...

MerCruiser alpha 1 gen 2 tapping noise in lower half

That is not a bad route if you like the boat. OEM is always best but -not sure the age of the boat a lot of folks will look at SEI Drives which are a good aftermarket replacement with a 3 yr warranty if you want to save a few bucks.

MerCruiser alpha 1 gen 2 tapping noise in lower half

if you don't have it get a factory manual for your drive as it outlines in detail all the procedures to set it up correctly. Also be aware that you will need some Mercruiser specific tools for this job in addition to some decent mechanics tools. When I did mine I was able to find the Merc...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

I would not worry about the plugs. My 3.0 always had 2 cylinder rich and two that looked perfect. same as you middle cylinders were different than the ends. I had the boat for 20 years… Your piston deposits look normal still a nice cross hatch on the cylinders. Pistons are not steel and will...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

yes I think this is more a issue with the parts list the OP was looking at. Most site like marine engine.com have the old part number listed as unavailable then the new P/N as available
