    mercruiser 4.3 thermostat housing

The non vortec and true vortec heads the intake and exhaust ports and combustion chambers are designed for better airflow and make more power. The easier way to tell is the intake manifold bolt pattern.vortec heads use 8 vertical head bolts instead of 12 angled into the cylinder heads. Ona 4.3...

    Dashpot on quadrajet (merc 488)

I think you are right. I did some additional reading on it on some GM forums and one mentioned that it keeps the air valve from slamming open when you nail the throttle and also cracks the choke open a hair when you start, otherwise choke would be too far closed. like you I like making it work...

    Dashpot on quadrajet (merc 488)

that to me looks like a choke pull off. I am not intimately familiar with Q-jets - maybe @kenny nunez is ? I'm spit balling here- it looks like the small flat rod (2 holes in it) coming out of the pull off attaches to the perpendicular rod behind the choke stove housing. the other hole in it...

    Dashpot on quadrajet (merc 488)

I was just gonna edit my post as I think GM used dashpots on the throttle side - can you post a picture of what you are working with? if you have a dashpot on the throttle lever I think that would indicate someone put an automotive carb on your engine. Fuel and electrical components are two...

    Dashpot on quadrajet (merc 488)

normally that is for the choke pull off, basically to use engine vacuum to open the choke. I suspect as long as the vacuum port is connected you can wire the choke open and run without it although you may have cold start or warm up issues. I ran my mercarb without a working choke for years in...

    Commander classic shifter issues

Trim up not working and having to use trailer to trim up is probably the trim limit switch on outdrive not working. You can jumper it out at the transom and see if trim works.

    mercruiser 4.3 thermostat housing

Both designs water flow through the manifold. warm manifold with separate feed to risers. Water only is supplied to manifold when thermostat is open, cold manifold gets flow all the time. in the end I think either design works. Thought was for less condensation with warm manifold. I have had...

    mercruiser 4.3 thermostat housing

Those look like restrictor for the exhaust crossover in the intake. Look like they go in the holes in gaskets just to the right of the intake ports with the two Siamesed Intake ports

    mercruiser 4.3 thermostat housing

this is an ok outline of the differnce between warm and cold manifold systems. on both systems some water is flowing at all times to cool the exhaust regardless of whether the thermostat is open...

1998-2000 Custom Boat Fuel prime issue (5.7L Mercruiser Inboard/Stern Drive w/ Alpha One Mercruiser outboard Drive)

As Danforth laid out doesn't impact what you are working through here. You can google a wiring digram with the knock system. it has sensor located on a Y at the block drain, wiring up to the knock module that piggybacks the ignition module and wiring between them. The knock module sends a 9 vdc...

How Do I Remove a Stuck Gimbal Bearing?

Not really …for water to be up that high it would be at the crankshaft level in the bilge. You would have a starter under water and likely water in the crankcase, least of your concerns would be a gimbal bearing then.

1998-2000 Custom Boat Fuel prime issue (5.7L Mercruiser Inboard/Stern Drive w/ Alpha One Mercruiser outboard Drive)

Not uncommon if the filter canister has been on there to have to use some azz to remove it. I had to do the same thing on my boat. It was 10-11 years old and the fuel filter had never been changed... put the filter housing in a vice, cut the filter in half with tin snips so I could get a good...

1998-2000 Custom Boat Fuel prime issue (5.7L Mercruiser Inboard/Stern Drive w/ Alpha One Mercruiser outboard Drive)

yeah I would remove the redundant disposable filter replace that section with new hose. some of the antisiphon valves are inside what looks like a barbed fitting so I would just verify you have fuel freely to the fuel tank valve. Have you checked the pump is running while cranking? not sure...

Advice on Removal of manifold Mercruiser.

So if you havent run it before investing a bunch into it I would pressure test the cooling system on the block. just block off the water in and out hoses to the block and rig up fittings to fit compressed air it should hold 15 psi or so.

Advice on Removal of manifold Mercruiser.

2 clamps is the factory set up. On the crack so you used it and confirm no water is getting into the oil? these and the similar lineage 3.0 crack just below the manifold on head side when not drained. if you are lucky it doesnt go into the crankcase and you can make a halfway decent shade tree...

bravo III milky oil but holds pressure for days

this is good advice. I did my 2004 alpha gen 2 last winter. Picked up fishing line on prop seal. saw some corrosion on the parts took drive apart replaced bearings in the upper as upper bearing in cap was corroded. In the end I think the corrosion was from the boat sitting before I bought it...

Advice on Removal of manifold Mercruiser.

yes you have to separate the rubber bellows/exhaust connector from the elbow. Usually over years of heat the rubber gets stiff and it sticks to the elbow so some persuasion is needed.... loosen the upper clamps on the rubber drop them down and stick a flat screw driver pick etc to get the rubber...
