    New to me sailboat

Keel cable 'huummm' is common to lifting keel boats. if you give the cable a bit of slack once the keel is in the fully lowered position, the noise/vibration should go away.

    briefly overheating

Do you have the closed cooling version (SeaCore - blue labels) or the standard cooling version (red labels)? Which outdrive do you have (Alpha or Bravo)? Do you have the vessel view display or Smartcraft gauges? When the engine starts cooling itself down, are you giving it any throttle? Has...

    Rinker 7.4 b3 performance expectations

48 mph seems OK, but a bit on the low end. I had a 24 foot boat (4800 lbs) that did 48 mph with a 7.4/ Bravo 1 combo. IIRC, the WOT RPM range is 4400-4600 The 454 MAG versions were in the 4800-5000 RPM range.

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

I have yet to see a CEL, but the number of fault codes and general weirdness is troubling. . .

7.4 Bravo water pump driven fuel pump

My Twin engine Formula had engines with those combo fuel/water pump housings. It seemed like they leaked often. I found that the lever arm on the fuel pump would also wear down. Slip the belt of the water pump pulley and turn the pulley by hand to see if you are getting cam action. I cannot...

    Rinker 7.4 b3 performance expectations

The checklist will be a good thing . . . Just remember that you are looking at a 26 year old boat, so performance may be the least of your worries. 1997 should be the gen 6 version of the 7.4, which is the most desirable version IMO. The Bravo 3 may not be quite as fast as the Bravo 1...

4.5 mpi winterization tstat or muff fill?

Also it would be good to know if this is the standard or SeaCore version (which is closed cooling) Also, I assume that the engine is the EC version (CATs) . . . is the boat new or new-2-you? If you do fill with AF, I would use the -100˚ F strength. BTW - this engine is a Mercrury in-house...

4.5 mpi winterization tstat or muff fill?

It would be best to get the service manual for that engine as it will outline the steps. Plus, you may need the service manual for other types of maintenance or repairs.

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

I think the new code is PU1000 Anyway . . the rear door lock still activates when the key is near it . . . might be a water thing making the door handle think someone is touching it. I'm not sure if it uses some sort of capacitive signal or a slight current when your hand touches it. but it...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

OK - stupid me . . . The car has been acting a bit strange ( I mean more strange than usual  ) . . . the remote keys suddenly don't work very well and the right rear door lock goes crazy if the remote is near it. o_O I replaced the remote fob's battery to no avail. So . . ...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

That blue/purple lighting looks really cool. I assume that you will be running with the engine hatch open just for visual effect. Not sure if it was covered during this thread, but I assume the engine is a gen 5 454  The gen 6 had the roller lifters and may have avoided the...

    Quit My Job . . .

True, but some (many) may not think that. Earlier in life the Admiral 'blamed' me for frivolous spending. So, for about a year or two I traced every dollar that came into and out of our household. It became apparent who was spending 'all the money'. Although recently I did get...

Help! I need to know what I got!!! Lol

Using the HINDecoder website, here is the info on the boat and company (which is out of business). . . . -------------------------------------------------------------- GAE03223M81L is of the standard HIN type called Model-Year HIN. GAE = Galaxie Boats Of California (Out of Business) 03223 =...

    Quit My Job . . .

I should be starting my next IT consulting gig in a week or so. It should last about 6 months which will take me into the middle of winter. The Admiral will be happy to have more money coming in. Not much happening on the boat upholstery front. It seems like I'm getting beat out by...

242 Cruiser water under cabin floor

Leaks can be tough to find. It might be best to post some pictures for further input. Googling does come up with some hits for your and similar Monterey boats. However, many cabin boats have these types of problems. Boats don't seem to have 'common problems' . . . they tend to be more random...

    Illinois registration numbers?

There is the Illinois Handbook . . . https://dnr.illinois.gov/content/dam/soi/en/web/dnr/boating/documents/boatdigest.pdf Which outlines the size and location of your boat registration numbers. You get to buy the letters/numbers yourself and put them on your boat, as mentioned.

    Confused about these parts

Yup, the gimbal bearing is in the gimbal housing part diagram . . . not part of the outdrive. The is a perma-lube and a grease-able version. Newer drives don't have the grease fitting, so its just the perma-lube.

    Owners Manual

If you can't find it or something close by doing a Google search, then consider the possibility that a 'manual' never really existed. Often, the so-called owner's manual for boats were nothing more that a run-down on navigation rules and the basics common to many boats.

    Transom and floor replacement

Plan on having the rot go about 5X further than you think. Cruiser style boat restoration is a bit more challenging than the smaller runabouts and bowriders since the hull structure and the cockpit structure are more separated by cabin space. There was a member ( @bigdirty ) who had to do...

    In-boat camshaft replacement - 7.4 Mercruiser

+1 for engine removal. You can then get a good look at both the engine and the bilge area of the boat. I know it has some scope creep to your original intentions, but it may allows you to clean things up and fix things that you would not normally be able to reach with the engine in the boat.
