MerCruiser 5.7 inboard gas engines not used in years – what to do

First check to see if there is oil in them. I would take the plugs out, squirt some oil in cylinders. If so put a battery in and bump the starter see if they turn freely. If not locked up - See if you can suck the oil out. add fresh oil and change filter. Would run them with plugs out and coil...

    Outdrive failure?

most likely. they tend to last the lifetime if alignment is ok. Alignment can be off from sagging engine mounts , gimbal, bearing going bad or rotten stringers and transom. Would think the bang would be more indicative of drive exploding but could be splines on coupler too. Take a look and see...

    winterizing question

From two different people on this site you will get three different answers. Some leave PG antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors in there to prevent corrosion of water jacket. Others like my self (upstate NY) just drain it and be done with it. I do chase the hoses with a little AF to get any...

    Outdrive failure?

Usually when you grenade the upper or lower the other unit is ok, but... metal pieces will get in the other half of the unit as they are connected from a lube stand point. So while the bearings gears etc in the lower may be ok it will need to be disassembled and cleaned. Of course there are...

    Outdrive failure?

Agree pull the top cap on the drive. On the gen ones with out the lube bottle if the input shaft seal leaks into bellow the upper drive gears run low on oil with predictable results. As outlined above the gear test you did is normal. Likely pull the top cap look for metal in the lube if those...

I have a 2004 Sea Ray 200 sport with a 5.0, only diff is I have a 4 bbl carb. Is you boat a sport or the select with the longer built in swim deck? Start with basic tune up (timing cap rotor plugs wires) and carb rebuild that scott recommends as likely you are down on power and should be doing...

    delco est timing specs

Without the shunt in at idle will be about 12-15 degrees . Scott has you steered straight with the 24 ish total degrees. When I had dieseling on my 3.0 fattening up the idle mix and decarbonizing the cylinder helped. Ran seafoam down carb while at fast idle til it stalled let it sit 30 min then...

    Toyota/Lexus Timing Belt Change Thoughts

Ran into same situation with my 65 GTO, bought a rebuild off Amazon, it worked for 2 years, basically sitting in the garage, as at that time the car wasn’t road worthy yet. Got a napa rebuild that has worked perfectly

    Engine sputters when turned off

Special tool was a typo. The idle mix screw on the TKS carb has an anti tamper screw so you don’t richen it and change emissions. you need a merc too, to alter it. Typically these were factory set lean as hell. Same thing happens with lawn equipment nit uncommon to fatten them up a bit.
