Hesitation/RPM Hunting on 496 Mag HO

Something like what you are describing really needs the full computer diagnostics to figure out. It sounds like you did the code scan, but often these issues will not create a fault code. I see that you have taken a few shots at it with the 'parts cannon' to no avail. If you already addressed...

    Fuel efficiency for long-ish trip

Without having a Flowscan, SmartCraft or a similar 'techy' solution, it is going to be a bit of guess work. 3500 RPM would be a good guess. You want to be enough above your minimum planing speed in order to gain some efficiency, but not too fast as efficiency drops off. (Take a look at some...

    Source for mooring chain/hardware?

@nola mike I had some trouble finding the correct size (small link) chain when I added a windlass to my Formula 330. Everything at the big box stores and online was 'standard' link size. I finally found some at North Falmouth Hardware, (tell them I sent ya  ) So, try the local...

    Sound deadening

I'm all for the egg crate stuff. I know 'marine' grade sound insulation has a foil layer to it, but the flat surface does not seem like sound deadening to me (more like sound reflecting) :p .

My turn for a "New to me boat"

Nice story. I guess you know why the boat was for sale. I hope you get it sorted out and back on the water. :)

Opinions on Volvo Penta engines and drives

They (Merc & V-P) are both based on GM engines in that era for the most part. V-P unique parts tend to be more expensive and there is less knowledge in general from both a professional and an Internet forum advisory perspective. If you stay with carburated engines, then probably not an issue...

    Spectrum Gelcoat Repair Kits?

I just checked the spectrum website, and it sure looks like they have de-emphasized the repair kits.

Volvo penta 2008 leaking water on left side of engine

So, that 'hole' is on the exhaust manifold (right?). It looks kind of small to be a core plug, but the short answer is yes there should be something there, as it should not leak. Check the other side manifold to see what the 'plug' may look like (usually the manifolds are symmetrical. As to...

Kodiak Anchor - Made by SouthCoast Marine . . .???

Quick update. . . I dropped the anchor off with a local welding shop. They are going to straighten the shank and add a 1.5" strip of stainless over the top of the shank (so it will have a 'T' profile). I should have it back in a few days. Then I got to bang off the rust of my line/rode...

Maybe my turn for new boat time

Wow . . . you are making me afraid to buy a brand new boat (or motor)

    My boat is being a boat . . .

When my family built our house (Falmouth, MA . . . 1992 ) near the water, it was required that the first floor living space be a certain height above mean high tide. I cannot remember the exact height, but no utilities could be below that height. So, we have a 'crawl space of about 5 ft high...

    My boat is being a boat . . .

It seems that all of the renovations near the water (ocean) are now requiring the house be raised 1 story. I've seem 2 already around my harbor.

    My boat is being a boat . . .

I was attempting to get an old Dell i3 Inspiron (model 7359) working as my Diacom laptop, but that effort proved fruitless. So, I had another laptop in better condition and more powerful - Dell Inspiron 15R i5 8 GB . . . Just needed to track a power adapter down for it and it came to life. I...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

I see that as the issue with some of the dealers/service shops; they don't necessarily know enough about the new engines.

    MacBook Pro . . . Tragedy

It's computer day at my house . . . The laptop arrived (good thing I was home, the delivery person just left it on the front step . . . thought I might need to sign for it ? . . . I guess not !!! ) In addition, I got an older Dell laptop working to (hopefully) be my...

2008 Chaparral 275 SSI 8.1 Volvo Penta GXI-J Soft Alarm Issues

I'm glad it has a happy ending. Although the TCP and Volt Ref #2 were misleading at first, the data showed the way. It shows that you really need the computer software to be able to fix these engines.

    Fuel Cost vs.Total Cost of Ownership . . .

Often there is discussion about the cost of fuel, which is a consideration of boat ownership, but not as significant as you might think. I try to save $$$ on fuel more out of principle than actual make or break of the boating budget. This morning, since I just came off a 3+ week 'vacation' (a...

    Larson 210 Senza

Just to add to the advice already given . . . If you have a section of damaged rubrail, you should be able to take a small piece of it to see what the cross-section looks like and approximate dimensions. Then match it up to the many rubrails on the Taco website. If the manufacturer (Larson)...
