    Modern Engine Thoughts

My collection of outboards totals 69. Four are 4-strokes, mounted on daily drivers. I LOVE the smell of a 2-stroke. I also like to tinker. May of my 2-strokes are run on occasion in my classic boats. Its a hobby. I bought my first 4-stroke in 2017. Bought a kicker shortly after. Traded...

Yet another - how to paint my trailer post :)

Wire brush to remove scale. Prime it with Rustoleum rust reformer. Then topcoat with Rustoleum Fish Oil primer. Finish coat with the Rustoleum enamel color of your choice. I did that with a totally rusty trailer back in 1986. I sold it in 2009 and it still looked like new.

    In dash GPS speedo?

The "best" speedometer I ever had was on my last boat. It was a paddle wheel on an Eagle Sonar Unit. My river has a 1 mph current. If I was going upstream at 30 GPS, the downstream was (obviously) 32. The paddle wheel showed 31 (actual water speed) no matter which way I went. My Yami PWC...

    In dash GPS speedo?

In the olden days I ran a performance curve as baseline data on a new boat. My reasoning was twofold. First to optimize the prop pitch, and secondly to review data annually to see if I was losing performance, and thus needed a tuneup. Back then I was lucky enough to live where boat races were...

    In dash GPS speedo?

That is exactly what IS practical. Going one place to another is one thing. But if you are doing a performance curve on a boat the GPS is worthless.

    How much trim?

I had a trim gauge in the dash. With the boat out of the water on the trailer I trimmed up until the OD was just above the keel. Then noted the position on the gauge. Surely, it was above the trim range, and into the tilt range. At that position I could run over anything as long as the boat...

    Ventelation cures

Ventilation. Sounds like the hull isn't true. Maybe you need trim tabs.

    In dash GPS speedo?

Yes its cool. But if it gets clogged its because there is an air hole in the tube. 35 years on a pitot and it was spot on even after all those years.

    In dash GPS speedo?

Buy a cheap GPS hand held and mount it to your dash with a Ram Mount. Or, replace the pitot and tubing and it will run spot on. My 1952 classic on an oldie boat runs equal to my GPS, and all I did was replace a rubber tube.

    No title or registration

If you like hassle, jump thru hoops. If you want to live in comfort put it on your front lawn with a sign that says: "FREE". Storage wars are a gamble. My neighbor does that and his garbage pile is HUGE every week. Just be sure that if you do sell it, you put the profits on your income tax.

Pairing engine size with boat size

I have 2 of those porkers. A 1-liter 60 and a 3-liter 150. Both are raised on the transom and the SS props were selected to achieve optimum rpm performance. Both jump on plane in an instant, with ZERO bow rise. On different boats with similar HP / weight ratios, vying the same course, my...

Pairing engine size with boat size

I bought a 40V weedwacker 3 years ago. It gives me 2 full yard jobs on 1 charge. Recharge is 1 hour when dead. Liking it so much I bought a second one this year for my cabin. Then, a chain saw and a leaf blower. All 4 units use the same battery so recharging half way thru a job is never...

    Solar Power Installation . . .

My Renogy will provide about 14+ volts if the batteries are low. After a short time the voltage drops to about 13.4 and stays there. If I turn off the solar cell, initially the battery shows about 13 volts, but drops to 12.7 after an hour or so (surface charge). I'm not reporting the voltage...

Pairing engine size with boat size

OMG, I just replaced ALL my lawn equipment (except tractor) with battery powered tools.

Pairing engine size with boat size

Remember annual car tune-ups? I.E, plugs, points and condenser. Then came electronic ignition on carbed engines, now EFI. Efficiency is one thing. But even more important is reliability. Sure the new systems are complicated and require a trained mechanic and a computer. But the fact that...

Pairing engine size with boat size

What does efficiency mean? Fast speed? Low fuel usage? Running the engine at optimum "performance"? To me, it means all of the above. I have 3 outboard powered boats. Top speeds are 26, 35 and 53. The fastest ones have similar mpg, and the slowest (an oldie) sucks gas like crazy. I run...

planning first trip to thousand islands

We are going up in 2 weeks.....again. It will be our 33rd trip. Not going to "The River" in the Summer is not an option. We have plied the waters in 9 different boats. From tent to camper to cottage to luxury hotel. I think our most memorable vacation was at the height of Covid. We...

Are Boston Whalers as prone to waterlogging as other boats?

According to the History of Whaler, right after college **** Fisher began building small light weight boats out of Balsa wood. In the 1950's when poly foam was invented, he began experimenting building skiffs with foam cores. When he perfected the hull design he began marketing his boats as...

    Solar Power Installation . . .

Maybe an apples to oranges comparison, but I also have a 100W Renogy system, although its on an RV. The system was installed 5 years ago on a 1 year old battery. I check water levels every 6 months, and I only have to add a couple ounces. In that time the battery has never dropped below 12.6...
