What tools needed to check over an old project bass boat before buying?

If I had an old piecocrap and was trying to get rid of it, that's exactly what I would say. If I was selling a non-running motor that only needed a cheap part, I would replace it myself. It would ensure a much higher selling price. When USCG plates are missing, there is always a reason. 40...

Glastron GT 185 —replacing a radio unit and depth finder advice.

There are depth finders and there are depth finders. My current 2 boats have OEM factory installed units that cost $1000 and $1200, but they are premium units that also have GPS and chart plotters. In past boats I have installed really good Humminbird units in several boats for only $99...

    Navigation Connection?

Glued to a single hull bottom, or contained within a box filled with fluid it would work.

    Navigation Connection?

Whatever floats your boat, but personally I find the digital gauges useless. Having a "picture" of the bottom and how it is trending is what I require. Humminbird makes a real nice and inexpensive color unit. It's relatively small. I have one on my 14' tinny. If visibility is an issue, it...

    Navigation Connection?

Climb under the dash and trace the wires. Transducers don't have to be transom mounted.

    Navigation Connection?

Navigation? If you are referring to the black bracket and the 2 plugs, they look like the power and transducer plugs on my Simrad Depth Finer. However, they also look like the plugs on a Humminbird I had a few years ago.

    $2500 boat

I know exactly where you are coming from. I once saw a boat in the early 1960's and decided I had to have one just like it. I didn't find one until 2005, and it was the proverbial "barn find". It was already over 50 years old and the registration sticker on the bow indicated it hadn't been...

Don't do anything until you sterilize the bulb and get all the water out of it.

what size kicker should I get.

Ah so. Syonara. Sachahatsy. Just kidding of course. The one I spoke of in my last post was a freaking Tohatso Mercury. And truthfully I'm not complaining. The kicker meets my requirements, regardless of rpm...

what size kicker should I get.

The real issue is that the prop selection for "some" kickers is not broad enough to achieve what is needed. As an example, I run the lowest pitch available on one of my rigs and it still won't hit spec WOT.

Upgrading trailer tires and rims - need advice

That's quite true. The problem is that ST tires sometimes fail when they are less than 6 years old, were fully aired and not run at excessive speed. In 55+ years of driving I had exactly one single set of car tires go bad. All 4 tires had tread separation. However, it was a used car and I...

Upgrading trailer tires and rims - need advice

They CAN be if the weight capacity of the car tire meets the requirements of the trailer. They are NOT usually used because of the capacity issue, plus the fact that all the pundits say you can't. The sidewall of a ST tire says not to be used on a vehicle with passengers aboard. That...

what size kicker should I get.

I put my first kicker on in 1970. Of course I don't have much experience....LOL. If ALL you want is trolling / fishing, a 5 HP will fit your needs. If you ALSO want it for an emergency power, a 9.9 would be preferred. My 3000# fiberglass bowrider sports a 5 HP Merc 4-stroke and it will push...

    Rug glue question

Don't ever put a rug in a boat. It will accelerate the rotting of the boat's innards. Use marideck instead. They have an adhesive that is designed for the job.

Upgrading trailer tires and rims - need advice

I have run 12", 13" and 14" bias tires on single and tandem axle trailers. In every case, the tire and spring capacity was designed to meet the load, not grossly exceed it. I also run an appropriate pressure. Given a choice, I choose bias because of safety and longevity. When I say "safety"...

Upgrading trailer tires and rims - need advice

My trailers with bias tires run just fine. If I keep an eye out for sidewall cracking, I'm OK. With minimal use I have successfully had bias last for years and years. I switched to radial because bias weren't available any more. I see no discernible difference in the ride. What I DO see it...

Boat cover: Maxum 2400 SR3 with Swim platform.

Carver sells several different "grades" of covers. If you look up your model and you can get a "custom fit", it will be as good as having one made locally, but much cheaper. If your model boat only shows a "styled to fit" cover, it will be close, but it won't fit as good as one made locally...

    $2500 boat

Cheap boats are out there if you look. Dirt cheap boats are usually because of a reason. If a guy was so poor on maintenance that he let the block crack, what else did he not maintain? I don't know for sure re. that vintage, but my guess is that the boat has wood stringers. It's current age...
