87 Sylvan 22’ offshore kicker bracket

Buy a retractable Panther bracket. Mount it on the transom with SS bolts and a metal backer plate. Seal the holes with 5200. Position the bracket so that in the down position the Kicker's prop will be below the boat.

Where is the lowest prices for new outboard engines?

Your friend has seen the boat so his opinion trumps ours. Nevertheless, all things considered, I would think a 25 4-stroke on a boat rated for a 40 2-stroke would be ideal. Certainly, a 9.9 would be a dog. The caveat is that the transom condition and wood needs to be in good condition. I...

    Fix hull damage.

Just another silly reply, not necessarily to the OP, but to anyone thinking about a resto.... If the boat was bought new by Grandpa, and has been in the family for decades, restore it no matter what the cost. If it is a classic that hasn't been built in eons, and there aren't many left...

    Fix hull damage.

I just copied your list and put it in my file cabinet. It fit my buddy almost to a T, with the following edits... Step 12 - used it a few times but the wife was now afraid of it. Step 13 - 3 years later it was rotten again. Turns out the "mechanic" was't as good as was reported. Step 14 - had...

    Fix hull damage.

It looks like you have structural damage. Surely, the innards rot out in time, but if the exterior has cracks like in your pics the repairs were delayed way too long. If you are lucky you might fix it for $4K. Then you will have a rig that's worth maybe $1500. You got it for $400 for a reason.

    Whats the best hydrofoil

Yup, there's 2 more reviews of fins on I/Os. The problem is that the outdrive is stuck on the transom where the manufacturer put it. Can't optimize that. Actually, the only boats I ever owned in the past 53 years that did NOT have a fin were the small lightweight outboards. They really...

So... I want to buy a boat, but I know nothing about them.

Its all supply and demand. Hardly anyone wants them any more. My son had a 21' Cuddy that he bought to sleep on weekends. Then he found out that he couldn't invite as many friends over during the day because the cockpit was too small. The hot boats right now are 25-27' bowriders with twin or...

So... I want to buy a boat, but I know nothing about them.

New boats are a couple years out since the demand now is quite high. Regardless, cuddys are few and far between since most manufacturers have dropped them from the line. Used boats are hard to find as well. The few that are available are cheap and for a reason, that being they are not...

Advice on Gas Cap for vintage Gas Can

Try Doug Penn for a cap. It will most likely be a used part. Laing's outboards for a gasket set for the OMC tank after you take it apart. If you luck out and the horn is merely plugged, you're good to go. If you need a new pickup horn, or a new cap if the vent is shot, cost will add up. My...

Bow of boat hits winch when loading onto trailer

When you crank the winch handle to load the boat which way do you turn it? Clockwise or CCW?

Advice on Gas Cap for vintage Gas Can

If you do find a cap, it would probably be in just as bad shape, or if its an NOS it would cost way more than its worth. Just buy a new can.

How does the old saying go? Age and treachery beats youth and wisdom every time.

    Ranger 2021 VX1888

My Boston Whaler and my SeaRay both came with comprehensive manuals, including plumbing system and electrical diagrams. They were written specific for my model. In addition to that, both dealers INSISTED on a sea trial before they would release the boat. Part of the trial was to go over every...

    Whats the best hydrofoil

Back in the day Trailer Boats Magazine had very informative articles geared toward guys with boats just like ours. I was already an "experienced boater" at that time, having experimented with different props, motor height, etc. Their "shootout" article on fins was what made me try one. That...

    Whats the best hydrofoil

Personally, I prefer the Doel Fin. It was the first on the market and has been copied but not duplicated. After having over 50 boat year's experience on multiple boats I won't own a boat without one. The caveat is that performance on an I/O is iffy, and to optimize the performance on an OB...

Where is the lowest prices for new outboard engines?

I have bought 3 motors in recent years from onlineoutboards.com. The price was better than I could get anywhere else and the service was awesome. They all came Fedex in about 3 days. I didn't check recently so I don't know what current availability is.

    Kicker motor questions???

My local Starcraft dealer sells a lot of fishing type boats that are rigged with a kicker. They are all rigged with electric start, throttle and shift controls, plus a steering bracket connected to the main. Some even have power trim, so you never have to leave the helm to put her in action...

    Oddball outboard ID

Probably an Eska or a Clinton, but it could also be a Sears. There should be a model and SN stamped somewhere.
