installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

That one has swaged hoses essentially same material as hydraulic hoses vs some of the cheap automotive ones with hose clamps... Would think the hoses are good for 10-15 years would just keep an eye on where you run it and if they are chaffing wrap them so they don't abrade

installing a remote oil filter set up, got a question....

Its only to keep excess tape out of the fuel or oil system keep them off the end of the fitting you are fine or use teflon paste. I suspect you know not to use them on the flare fittings shown. Assume there are some NPT threads in the system? On a tapered thread the thread makes the seal the...

    Can’t Figure out Prop ….

Check what is on there now not the catalog, 23 doesn’t seem correct As my 3.0 was sluggish with a 19”…and we keep asking current wot rpm. This is key to deciding next prop. Do not try a different prop without establishing current wot rpm.

Oil leak - Volvo Penta 5.7

Seems like you need to be looking for a ps leak if you are loosing level every few weeks. Would look at return line clamps going to ps cooler

    Can’t Figure out Prop ….

Cant read the numbers from here. You need to pull it off and wire brush the numbers- are there any numbers on the side of prop? Looks like it hasn't been off in a while? if so might be good to grease the splines and check the annode behind the prop. As Scott outlines need to know your current...

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

that is not how a power valve on a rochester 2 jet or Mercarb works. There is an piston/actuator that comes down from the airhorn and pushes the power valve open. At high vacuum/low throttle opening the piston gets pulled up into the airhorn and doesnt push the plunger on power valve open...

    48 years...

not needed you are pushing against plenty of metal. What are you using to weld with tig or mig? Was trying to guess from the photos.not mocking your work, I’m just learning how to tig aluminum .

    Merc 3.0 Overheating

Have you verified the 175 plus is accurate with an ir thermometer? Do you have a ps cooler Is it clear of debris. There is a test to verify water flow up to engine I think you want to see 3 qts in about 15 seconds .

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Jets do not affect idle and transition circuit . If you look down the bore and see when fuel starts dropping off the boosters you will be close to 2000 rpm, below that you are on the idle circuit

Really Dumb Lower Shift Cable question

save yourself a hassle and get an OEM one. If you pull the core out of the old one, shove a weed wacker wire back up it, tie it off in engine compartment, slide old sheath out, then use the weedwacker wire to route it properly around the wye pipe etc.

    Which hull brands to avoid

Agree on the Bayliner, most of the really negative comments are old thinking. The newer ones are very close in fit and finish to the Sea Rays they are made next to in the same plant... Also agree on used stuff how it was cared for and maintained is more important than anything else.

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

I don't think prior to the Q-jet coming out they had a 4 bbl big enough in an OEM format. The AFB that was on the early 4 bbl engines is 500 cfm. I don't think the 3x2 had better mixing than the 4's. I think in the end there is a reason that Pontiac went to a higher rise intake and the q jet...

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

Never saw the movie. That is the original color Burgundy, just the cross ref number PPG gave me when I painted it back in 1992 is a touch more red, actually like it better. Rust wasn't too bad on this but accident damage was and the engine trans and diff had been blown up at various times. I...

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Agreed wonder if there is a vacuum leak at carb base. would try shooting starting fluid at base of carb to see if rpm changes

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

At idle nothing should be dripping out of the venturis. The only fuel flow is below the throttle plates in idle circuit holes. Either bad needle and seat /float, incorrectly set float level, or too much fuel pressure. Since you had same issue with both carbs might lean towards fuel pressure...

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

not sure what it is? I assume carbon removal from rings. Did that with mercruiser power tune and seafoam soak. Had less carbon coming out than when I have used it previously I think root cause was it was assembled by an 18 yr old idiot that I see in the Mirror

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

I thought his valve train video showed relatively even lift on all 8 . Of course I look at more threads than centerfolds in my younger days could be mixing them up…

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Chinesium... to the OP if you shut the idle screws all the way down and it still runs gas may be overflowing the float bowl would look down the bores during idle. This assume you are at a normal idle and not into the transition slots like idling at 1000 rpm. No he did the leakdown which showed...
