    I wonder if the previous owner installed a longer pushrod trying to compensate for the worn cam lobe. It would be worth the while to check and also compare the rocker arm in question with a known good one.

    Is the popping sound with the same delay between events or does it do it randomly? Have you ever tried a separate small gas tank? Also with the engine off push the throttle all the way in forward then look at the roller in the ”V” notch on the shift linkage. It must be in the middle of the “V”.

    It may be possible that the centrifugal advance is sticking. Remove the breaker point plate and check the springs and the posts that retain the weights. Was the carburetor a marine version that you installed?

    If you use a slide hammer be careful not to shear off the snap ring groove. First try using a crow bar to get behind the gear and also driving it in and pulling prying it out. I can feel your pain, I have had my share of those binding steering shafts.

    There is a slotted head screw on the drum that the cable wraps around. if that is out then you just have to keep rotating it back and forth while pulling/prying and it will come out. There is a plastic bushing in the housing that corrosion builds up under which causes the shaft to bind.

    That hose is the crankcase vent that is supposed to be plugged in to the air intake box. There should be a nipple or a hole where the hose fits.

    Lower drive shaft seal wear.

    The worn area can be repaired with a Speedy Sleeve which can be purchased at any bearing supply or even a NAPA store. If you can measure it it should be around .875. The sleeves are stainless and do not wear out. They come with an installation kit but great care has to be used not to damage it .

    If you find rust on the shaft next to the gear try cleaning it. Sometimes that will cause what you are describing.
