N Y requires everyone to pass a powerboat operators license

Unfortunately, I can see why they are doing this....having been an avid boater for over 60 years, I see more and more idiots driving boats each year. Boating accidents are at an all time high...if people can't be responsible on their own, the gov't steps in. Doesn't always make things better...

What are normal temps idling with muffs on the sterndrive? Merc A1G1 Alpha one. 3.0

Cheap Tstat or brand name unit ? Well worth the money for a good unit ... What pressure is your hose at, low water pressure can cause higher temps and so can cheap muffs not allowing enough water to get into the system. My 3.0 would reach about 150 mabey 160 on a hot day or if there was a small...

    Fuel smell after fueling up

Sure some fuel isn't running over the fill inlet ? On my boat the fill is in a bad place, hard to reach and even harder to tell when getting close to full. Some always blows out the vent, and you can't use much fill pressure or it backs up the fill tube into the motor well ! You might check...

    LiFePO Batteries ???

From what I understand ( and that isn't much) they are referring to active discharge from something making a draw down, which the BMS controls, not parasitic draws or minor discharge under normal battery life cycles.

Is the carb opening all the way ?

    LiFePO Batteries ???

On my liturature, it mentions no charging or discharging below 32 or the BMS will shut it down. It is recommended to store above what equals 15 degrees for longest life but can handle temps below zero if not being charged or discharged. My BMS is made to stop any cycling below I believe 32...

1957 Johnson 35hp short to long shaft

Or, look for some donor motors that have long shafts. If I remember correctly, in those days, that 5" extension could be added or removed whatever you needed. Back in those days, long shaft motors were a little scarce around my neck of the woods, but lots of used kits were around. Happy hunting !

    LiFePO Batteries ???

It is my understanding that storing them in the cold is not an issue as long as no charging or discharging is being done.

    Skinny water day.

Many years back my sister and her husband had a breakin, their Lab never made a sound until the bad guy came into the house. Then he attacked and almost tore his hand off, that was holding a knife. After hours of surgery they had to amputate the guys hand. The dog was the biggest baby there...

    Boat budget question

I solved that issue years back. When I wanted to spend money on toys, I just picked up a second job. Started teaching at local community college, pay was great only a couple nights a week. All boat costs and the kids dental braces came out of that school money so the wife had no say as I was...

    CVX-16 New Owner

Be prepared to spend big bucks and lots of hours doing wood skeleton replacement and fiberglassing. The motor will be far less work even n if needing a complete overhaul. You mentioned that you knew very little about boats. Been a boat owner for over 60 years, can tell you this....are you...

    Need help with electrical switches

No diagrams for any boats...motors yes, but boats no. Time to create your own ! Replace wires as needed, wire one item at a time and check each one. With a big bowl of spegetti, best to just start over......

Free boat with history of leak... worth it? Will a survey catch issues?

Obviously not a boat " mechanic" , the drill is the only way to know for sure, any thing else is a waste of time. When the transom gets really soft, you can tilt up the outdrive, then stand on it and jump up and down, if the transom flexes at all, it is bad.

1969 IMP "Thunder" 20 ft, Restoration

Yes, you will see fiberglass on the hull bottom....the wood part is enclosed in fiberglass !! Other than hatch covers etc everything else will have the plywood enclosed inside the fiberglass....this is where the time, effort and money comes into play.. The fiberglass must be cut open to dig...

How do you pin point the source of a loud vibration

Never test water flow with muffs....the pressure from the hose will show water flow when the impeller may not be pumping !! Sounds like the owner needs to do invest in a factory service manual for his engine and outdrive...
