    Newbie looking for advice

Second the above. I realize they're pricier but, especially if you're not mechanically inclined, buy an outboard.

Nauticus Smart tabs vs Bennett Self Leveling Trim Tabs?

Those old Hondas of that vintage were very heavy and the adding of the 2nd battery I imagine was the death nell. Moving the battery forward might do wonders. Also tell him to check his engine height. A few pics of his stern would be great.

Nauticus Smart tabs vs Bennett Self Leveling Trim Tabs?

He will also have to consider how much stuff is in the way of mounting them. Transducer, kicker motor, boarding ladder, live well drains, etc.

    Gas tank size

It's an inland boat. I doubt it has anything bigger than an 18 gallon. FWIW I put nearly twice the amount of StaBil called for. You never know what's going to happen in your life during off season. It could be over two years before you get back on the boat again.

    Vibration TurningPoint 4 blade

Not doubting you but just to confirm, I think TP props have proprietary hubs right? Do you have their hub? Do you have the aluminum or steel version?

New gimbal bearing, can’t get alignment tool in coupler

It appears to me from the OP's pics those engine mounts have failed.

Going to look at the sea doo switch

Not being negative, it's a neat concept, just wondering how much rattling it would do?

gear oil drain plug alternative to slotted screw driver?

External hex would protrude, cause drag and disrupt water flow to prop???

gear oil drain plug alternative to slotted screw driver?

As suggested above a wide screwdriver is the key. I tighten as much as possible by hand then grab the shaft of the screwdriver with small pliers, rock the screwdriver back and forth so I can feel when it's flat against the slot and nudge it a bit tighter. Most of the damage to my slot happened...

gear oil drain plug alternative to slotted screw driver?

I bought the Sierra equivalent for same reason described above (slot getting worn out). Got it all pumped up, removed the pump end, stuck my finger over the hole to stop the bleeding while I grabbed my new Sierra drain plug. Wouldn't go in. Put slight pressure on with screwdriver but no luck...

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

I'm two impeller changes in (OEM kits) with using the metal gasket with a thin layer of permatex. Have had no issues. I think Merc is combining Verado stuff with Alpha stuff in their kits for marketing reasons. I seem to recall mine containing yellow (rubber I think) orings for drain plugs, I...

Tach at 0 when cranking 5.0 MPI

Had a chance to further investigate. That's my dad's old Fluke from the 80's. It may not be fast enough but if accurate the reading looks ok. Also I swapped batteries and same result so I'm gonna rule out battery as the problem. Something new this time. Tach read 850 rpms a few times while...

Tach at 0 when cranking 5.0 MPI

This occurred near the end of the day so I don't have much history to go on. I'll observe more on next outing. Good point, thanks.

I rarely have a helper but I'll see what I can do. Thanks.

Tach at 0 when cranking 5.0 MPI

It's a two year old Advance Auto 1000 MCA group 24. I realize it still could be bad. I have an older Everstart. I'll swap it out and see what happens when I get the chance. Thanks for the input.

Tach at 0 when cranking 5.0 MPI

I have a 2002 5.0 MPI A1 G2 serial 0M345638. I noticed my tach acting erratic only for a few seconds the other day. First time I've noticed this in 19 seasons and 1490 hours with the boat. After this I noticed the tach went to 0 when cranking. According to other posts on the forum I think it...

    Prop torque induced list/roll?

I understand how the trim fin behind the prop can affect steering torque but I do not understand how it would affect boat roll. He has power steering so probably has a flat zinc.
