Looking at this Chieftain 21ft, what questions should I ask?

This fella podded this Chieftain and SEEMS to have done a nice job. Redid the inside totally, shortening the cabin to make more room for fishing. Looks like now only a buddy and fishing space. What questions should I ask if Im interested in buying? year? stringer and transom condition? rivets...

Can I install a newer outdrive?

Well, put the leg in, tested it and CAN’T believe the coupler survived! And the reward!

Can I install a newer outdrive?

All right, well we got it all back together. Found an MC Dash one drive that was only a few thousand off, with serial number, and in excellent shape for pretty much nothing. Replaced water pump, impeller, shift shaft bushing. Greased all u-joints, pressure tested. Good oil flush, new oil. Now...

Can I install a newer outdrive?

I found a real nice leg (virtually free!) from a group Of Double Eagle owners I’m part of. I am in the process of going over it and servicing all of it. New impeller, check the water pump, checking all bearings, seals, etc. Would this type of unit work to pressure test the leg?

    Are these couplers interchangeable?

1977 Mercruiser GM 140, serial #3773432, MC-1 leg. Blew my leg and replacing that. Wondering if these couplers are compatible? They are same era but different motors. One GM, one Ford. I have a line on one near me. Thanks in advance for your help!

Can You Make Up For Different Gear Ratio With a Different Pitch Prop?

Just servicing the leg now. It's in better shape than the one I had on there! Just flushing it, replacing impeller, water pump gaskets, mini o-ring, input U-joint o-rings and pressure testing. Got it almost free!

I ended finding a real nice MC-1 with the right ratio, 1.97

Can You Make Up For Different Gear Ratio With a Different Pitch Prop?

He thinks it had the Merc 160. In there so prolly the 1.65 pitch. Whatever it is, I should be able to find the correct leg. There is a group with my exact boat and many are removing the inboard and putting pods on. Just put a wanted post in there. Not really rushed…

Can You Make Up For Different Gear Ratio With a Different Pitch Prop?

So “proper” gear ratio for my setup is 1.97. One I am looking at is 1.65. I will wait to find right leg!

Can You Make Up For Different Gear Ratio With a Different Pitch Prop?

To start, I don’t think so. I need a leg that has a gear ratio of 1.97. Fella with a 1.5 ratio leg says “you can just use a different pitch prop”. Doesn’t seem right to me?

Can I install a newer outdrive?

Yes, I suspect that too. We will make sure we check that!

Can I install a newer outdrive?

The lower end still shifts nicely into forward and reverse. What is the likelihood of damage in the lower end, when the top end failed? Could I check this by removing lower end and shifting into reverse and forward to see how it performs?

Can I install a newer outdrive?

System went as we were cruising along at 3000 rpm, barely a little “cruump”. Now it doesn’t spin in forward gear at all and moves a bit in reverse, with a click.

Can I install a newer outdrive?

I THINK I MAY HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM… the gear end yolk sheared off at the blue mark. How could enough torque be created to shear it there?!

Can I install a newer outdrive?

Here’s the manual with the serial number range I’ve been using for parts. Shows gear ratio of 7.98. I assumed it was a typo of 1.98
