    This is was the first motor on the boat: it's still here at the house. A little dirty right now, but it runs. I have the 1957 Johnson 7 1/2 that we ran the most on it home in Tennessee, working on it as I can. We have an Evinrude 9.9 that runs it most of the time now.

    Ooof ... who knows? Without a HIN, that's one of a zillion boats manufactured by any one of a few hundred flash-in-the-pan builders. As likely as not, it came from Sears or Montgomery Ward.     ^^^ was just typing something similar. Sounds like it needed to "load up." Impeller probably settles and gets it's vanes in the right place the first time you spin it, but not too much more than that. If you've got muffs on that drive, you can let it run and start drawing some more water.

    Your drive tilts from one switch, and trims from another. Shallow water, you can idle in gear (like Scott says) and then lower the drive as soon as you can. After that you trim with the other switch.

    If the lanyard is missing, there's usually a clip of sorts that holds the switch in the upright position. If you remove the clip, the switch goes down automatically. Without the clip the switch won't stay up. You can purchase a replacement lanyard for most of them.
